As tt rule the tirst (juaitei of the year Is not propitious for the ncorporatlon of new industries and enterprises, but this year the otNce of the secretary of state has recorded the organization of a very large number of companies which show that the State knows no halting in the forward march on the road of progress. There have been a great many banking institutions set on fool some of them companies of not very large capitalization, but still in the Held for the upbuilding of small communities. The number of small cotton seed oil mills is increasing so rapidly that t he sit nation becomes almost alarming, for fear that they will get in each others' way and be aide to operate for only a small part of the year on account of the fact that the supply of cotton seed is restricted and the big organizations will and must have seed in order to keep the?r plants running. There is as much abuse of machinery Idle as there is in machinery in operation, it is said. There have been a few cotton mills organized and others which have not reported t<> the secretary of slate are bung projected. As a rule these are small mills in sections not occupied heretofore with such industries? showing that the developement of South Carolina is not conllncd to one section. Two other great corporations have filed letters asking for commissions giving them authority to open books of subscript ion the Magnolia Mines company of Charleston, $300,000, and the Columbia and Augusta Kail road company, which shall be chartered at an amount not to exceed $20.oon pet mile. Thursday he made additional announcement in regard to the State Summer school for teachers, which will be held at Winthrop college from June 23rd to July 21st. Wlnthrop is an excellent place for such a school because of the splendid equipment, accessible libraries, reading rooms and extensive accommoda' Ions. Arrangements have been made for boarding in the college and this gives the South Carolina Summer school qlutc an advantage over some others because the teacheis 1 are conveniently located and can enjoy better advantages. Courses of study have been provided in pedagogy, school supervision, elocution and reacting, grammar, literature, rhetoric, library work, drawing, sight singing, music, history, georgraphv, arithmetic, algebra, geometry, obser- ^ vation work, nature study, botany and < school gardening, manual training and t kindergarten principles. Some of the ? ai)lest teachers of the State and nation will take pir, in this work and a n large attendance is anticipated. A special feature of this school will be a series of addresses by some of the I most, effective platform speakers avail- i able and some work will lie done looking to the educational campaign which lias been planned for the summer.
