March 12th IQ03 Many are mailing enquiries about the act of the Legislature which pro- , vides for a vote next Fall on the stock law. As soon as wo can cb tain a copy of the act, we will publish it in full for the benefit of all who arc seeking information on the subject. Ik the election to fill the vacancy in the office of .1 ud^e of Probate, and the election to decide the question of the Htoek law for this county could have come off totfothct, some expense would have been saved to the county. "K)ur Senator and Krpresentatives tried to arrange it in this way but failed. Two special elections in the county in the course of one year is something unusual. As will be seen by reference to their final presentment printed in another column, the ^rand jurors at the recent term oi our court recommended the erection of a new court house and jail. In doing this they but repeat the recommendation of grand juries for several years past. Only last Summer, the people of the county had the opportunity to vote on this question and had a majority of the people voted for the new building, the new court house might now have been in process of erection. The small tax that would have been necessary, would have hurt no one, many would hardly have known it, and we would soon have had and enjoyed, these im provements which will coine, and sooner or later will force themselves upon us. If we arc ever to have up to-date public buildings, why not now? Notes From Little River. Many farmers of this section are getting ready to plant tobacco. W H. Stone, the efficient secretary and treasurer of Stone Bro's Co., left here last Friday for Northern markets on business. Vereen Bros, are closing out the stock of H. J. Vereen deceased, at 35 per cent below cost. We hear that T. N. Cooper contemplates erecting a large milling plant that will be capable of manufacturing anything in the wood line. Miss Bessie Livingston and Miss' Lee Russ, visited at Wain pee on Sunday. The Steamer Sanders made a fly ing trip here last Saturday carryitw her flag at half mast, being char tered to convey the corps of a ne gro who was killed last Thursday in Wilmington by an electric wire. Ci.am Buykb. From Socaatee. Miss Eulee Stalvey, one of Marion's most charming young ladies, after spending u few weeks with relatives here, left for her home last week. G. F. Sarvis, of the Str. Sessoms visited relatives here Monday. The party on the 26th, was a fine success, 22 were present and all seemed to enjoy themselves im mensely. The caroms party on the Srd, was simply fine. John Marlow, accompanied by his sister, Miss Rosa, visited friends here Sundav. Miss Carrie Cooper spent a few days in Conway last week. Booth Items. Health generally good. Farmers are busy preparing for their crops. Tj H. Booth has gone to Clark ton, N. C., to work lor I he Railroad Co. Tobacco plants are looking fine. I think they will be ready to transplant by April 1st. City Booth came home last week after an absence of five months. S. M. Allen of Fair BlufT, N. C-, was here last week. We think H N. Sessions will make us a good Probate Judge. Wo thought we would mike the race, but when we heard that Mr. Sessions was in the race, we declined. We think some young man ought to have it. The ease of the State vs. Causey for obstructing a public neighborhood road was not finished on Wednesday, the hour being late. On rhursday morning the judge charged the jury and they retired to consider the case. After being out for several hours, they returned a verdict of guilty. The sentence was that the defendant pay a fine of $1, and remove the obstruction from the road. The attorneys for the defendant made a motion for a new trial which was refused, and defendant gave notice of intention to apival. This case awakened much interest and the court room was crowded with spectators clui ing the trial. The State vs. A A. Turner charg ed with assault and battery with in tent to kill, was cal ed on Thursday but was continued until Friday morning, the defendant plead guilty to the charge and was fined in the sum of $125.00, which was paid. Thare was very little business done in the court of common pleas. No civil case was tried. Some orders in default cases were taken. A special term of the court of, common pleas will be ordered in the Summer for the purpose of dispos ing of several cases now standing on the docket. The court wu.-> adjourned sine die on Friday morning. We publish in another coining the final presentment of the gramt jury. ' I Finnl Prescntmct of the Grand Jury. To llis Honor, i) A Townsend, Presiding Ju<lge. We, the* grand jurors, for Horry County, at the March term of the court now iioldcn, for the year A, 1). l'.U)3 beg leave to submit, this, our tioal presentment for said term: i We have acted upon all bills submitted to us by the Solicitor. 2. We have examined the court house, and jail and report that wo find the same in fair sanitary condition. 'I. We find that the public roads in all sections of the county are in very bad condition, but that no blame therefor can be placed upon any of the road overseers, or upon the County Supervisor, and we are unable to,suggest any remedy under existing legislation in this State. 4. We find that the bridge across Cedar Creek'on the old Pee Dec road Is in a dangerous condition, and reecommend that immediate steps be taken by the County Supervisor to have the same put in a good state of repair. f>. We find that the embankment on the Sandy 1.11 uIT public road, between the hill and the Sandy BlufT brklgc, is in an unsafe condition and should be at once repaired. 6. It has been reported to us that the ford across Socaatec Swamp near David Rabon's place is in an impassable condition, and we recommend that the County Supervisor take such steps as may be necessary, to put the said erossing'in good travelling condition. 7 We have appointed the following committees, to wit: (1) A committee consisting or three of our body to make an examination of the hooks anci accounts <>! the dispensary at Toddville, and to report the result of their examination to this body; (2) A committee consisting of three of our body to make an examinat ion of the books and accounts of the dispensary at Floyd's X Roads, and to report the result of their examination to this body; (il) A committee consisting of three of our body to | make an examination of the books and accounts of the dispensary at the Round Swamp, and to report the result of their examination to this body ; (1) A committee consisting of three of our body to examine the public oftiees of this county and report the result of their examination to this body. 8. Wo repeat'the recommendations of the former grand jurors of this county, as to the erection of a aew court house and jail. In this I -onuection, we recommend that our Hate Senator and delegation in the louse of Representatives, procure ! < passage of an act at the next h. ssion of the Legislature, providing for theeroction of a new court house and jail for the county,,, and that said act be positive in its terms and requirements, and not conditioned upon a vote of the people. We express our appreciation to his Honor, the presiding Judge and all ofticors of the court for the many courtesies shown usdurincr t.hn term All of which is respectfully* sub milted. J. M.
