Tilk number of mercantile estab lishments here has greatly increased during the last few years, still each one. we venture to say, has more trade now, than a merchant did when the number of stores was only half what it is now. Some good system of lighting our strects is one of our most pressing needs just now. The few gasoline lamps which is all that we have ev er had, have worn themselves out, or at least, for some reason, concerning which we are not informed, have ceased to give even their feeble glow. Truly, we arc whore Moses was when the light went out. The small lamps now at the street corners are better than nothing as long as they are kept in repair and receive the proper attention. The town should be able to afford electric lights, and we hope to see a move meat by our city authorities in this direction before long. The Legislature ha3 been working lately on several proposed amendments to the road law. The law passed at the session of 1902 has proven unsatisfactory in some respects. The commutation tax of one dollar, is certainly too little and out of all proportion to the eight days of labor required. Nearly every road hand in the county will avail himself of the opportunity of paying out, and when the money is all in, there will not be enough to accomplish much good to our roads. Some change in this law will certainly be made by the Legilature at its present session, 1 ut just what the changes will be cannot be told for some time yet. To Increase the Shriff's Salary. A bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives by the lion. D. D. llarrelson, to raise the salary of the sheriff of Horry county. We have not been informed as to the amount of the proposed increase, but suppose it will, if passed, put the sheriff's salary on a par with the County Supervisor's. Our public offices should be filled by the best men of our county, am1 to get those men, adequate salarie must be paid. The practice of cut ting salaries below the below tin limit (>f - - m?.-j IIUVI'I Sil Vbl anything in the long run. The sal ary of our sheriff, was fixed by the act of 1002 at three hundred dollar? entirely out of keeping with the salaries of other county oflieeis. The Sheriff's office is a very important one, and indeed we think that it should carry a salary of more than three hundred dollars. Sittings From Socastee. The recent raii.s and t he con t in uous and increasing travel render the roads almost impassable. Messrs. \V. B. Clardy and Robbie Stalvcy left last Thursday for a visit to Marion. Miss L?ucy Sarvis, one of Socastee's most charinim/ young ladies, after a brief vacation, takes charge of another school in Georgetown. The progressive and prosperous firm styled J. M. Stiilvey At Co., intend to erect a new store near the one they now occupy. Prof- S. L. Watson preached the third and fourth Sundays in January at the Baptist church at Socastee. We regret that Mrs. W. A. Dusenbury is quite ill at present, though the health of the community is generally good. vv o arc all glad to know that Miss Annie Stalvcy who for a long while suffered from a severe and serious seige of typhoid fever, is able to .attend school again.
