I VVM?. iMVMFuru UlllI'lUM* is the crime of which a lieutenant governor of South Carolina is guilty. This is the verdict every where.* j Fiiom every section t?f the county ^ come reports of new tobacco barns, While the farmers are preparing to raise the weed, Conway is making 1 ready to furnish tho market. The ; new warehouse is a certainty. Our t wo warehouses will make it lively for other markets this year. S<? far, it does not appear, that ] there is very much important work ?. to be done by the present Letfisla- ] ture, unless we count the routine , work and tho usual Hood of bills on \ minor subjects as important. Hut nevertheless, no one knows what * ma}' turn up before the end of the ' session. Tiik credit system of doiutr business is gradually disappearing with the advancing years. The cash basis is the only safe way for all parties. May tho time soon come when 1 the mass of our farmers will be able a to pay cash for all their supplies the ( year round, and not be compelled to mortgage their crops, in some v instances, oven before the crops are planted. a I a I t Thr very stringent law against |s carrying concealed weapons, is al- |y most a dead letter so far as sop-la pressing the evil is concerned. It I has been suggested that the law bej. amended so as to make a conviction ofjthe offense, a bar to holdingjpublic li otlice, similar to the law in reference I to duelling. We believe the idea a good one. j ____________________ s Tilhuk are few who feel absolute-1 ly satisfied with what they havel accomplished in life Few who arc I contented in reference to the way in I which they have lived their lives. I No man but wh > feels that lie might ^ have done just a lit tie better in any 11 undertaking he has ever attempted. It is better so, because where there!1 is any energy, there is a constant!, striving to improve. The man who! is content, fully satisfied with him-r self, never feels like trying to reach I out after greater things? never as- 1J pires to any higher sphere. Give us More Light. I It is with no (lcsiro to critic', tlie present administration of 11. affairs of our town that wc \\i-to call the attention of the city gov eminent to certain conditions at present existing, for which we can : see no good reason. First among these is the lack of lights on the streets of the town. For the past several weeks we have had unusually rough weather, the streets and sidewalks have been in a deplorable condition, and the nights have been the darkest in which it has ever been our misfortune to have to go abroad. And all this time no lights, not even an ordinary oil lamp, has been seen on the most public corners and streets of the town. In walking out of a church on Main Street one is immediately plunged into impenetrable darkness, and a step may laud him in a very sticky quality of red mud. Where 1 building is in progress, and brick \ and mud have ob?'ructed the side , walks, not even the customary lantern has been placed to warn belated pedestrians of the danger of falling into an excavation, or of j coining into unpleasant contact with a pile of brickjeithcr of which will not tend to improve one's temper ! or his morals We do not believe 1 A 1 * - ' mere is another town in South Carolina, of the size of the town of 1 Conway, which is left so completely J in darkness, except when we are 1 favored bv the light of the moon; , and on beautiful moonlight nights ( we have sometimes in the past seen the street lights brightly burning. ( And yet in the matter of city taxa tion we have reached the constitu- 1 tional limit. . One other thing we beg to mention,?the condition of the streets. ' Even Main Street has been allowed y to become in one place, at least, a most unsightly mud hole on account ? of water having been turned into it, \ when a small expenditure would j relieve the situation in that regard. t So fai as we are individually con cerncd these matters are of little inconvenience to us; but for the sake I of our town, in which we ought to I feel some; prideund in order that i ho stranger within our gates may ot conclude that this is the best ve know how to do, wo sincerely lone that some steps'may be taken oward improvements hi these par ieulars.
