A town the size of Marion could easily atT^rd water works of a modern kind and we are surprised that the cnterpise lm* failed It is asserted that the matter will be brought up again. In Deversity of Crops There's Money. The experience of farmers who have tried it, shows that suecess comes from diversifying crops. For the farmers of Horry county to plant all cotton, all tobacco, or all of any thing else to the exclusion of the food crops, means failure. All farmers will agree with us that this proposition is true Many have tested it by actual trial to their actual loss. While it pays to plant a variety of the food crops, it pays too ?o plant a variety of money crops so tar as variety in this connection is possible. We want to see the tobacco acrcatrc in the county increased, but wc would not advise our farmers to quit cotton entirely. Have a variety of money crops, so that if one fail, you can fall back on the other. This brings us down to the subject we wish to impress upon our farm ers. This subject is the matter of tVllf'U flll'miiw. ! I I... ' - 111 tut* rouniy. me raising of fruits and vegetables fur nishes another money crop which may be added to the tobacco and the cotton. Strawberry planters made money this year and they make more the longer they plant them. We want to see a growing interest along this line until Horry county shall be one of the leading trucking sections of the State. All that is needed, as in the case of tobacco, is for the farmers to become interested and give it a trial suflicient to demonstrate to them that there is money in it. This cannot apply to the whole county as our transportation fucili ties now stand, but it does apply to a large section around Conway and along both sides of the Atlantic Coast Ijine Railroad And the future will sec other railroads passing through Horry County. Our hearts were saddened on the 12th inst , when the death angel came, to the home <>f Mr. and Mrs. John T. Watts and claimed their brightest rose, little seven year old Eddie, which was a great and sudden surprise to us all. Little Eddie was bright and cheerful, a child that loved to go to Sunday School. We can not understand the hand of Providence, but we know that God knows best and that lie had a good and wise purpose in calling this child so early. Tlio communication in last week's ! issue over the signature of ''James ' Ira furnished some interesting ' reading, but 1 must eonfess lie went 1 too far back for most ot us 1 can go back fifty years. 1 remember going to that old log church at Cool Spring where so many of our friends have since been laid to rest. Jos. j Parker and others made this circuit j wnieh extended all over the county. Thomas lieaty, a local preacher from the Lake Swamp section would ride down to Cool Spring and preach on Saturday and Sunday very often. 1 never heard of his receiving any pay. Both the men and the women dressed in ^suits made from cloth spun and woven at home. It was seldom you would sets any kind of vchteklc to ride in to church. Bid ing horseback was the order of the day. At that the people seemed to tie contented and independent. Mortgages and Lions were not known. Taxes were low, a common one-horse farmer would pay about 3"i or -10 cents. Such men as B. G. W. Grissctt and Joel B Skipper went on horseback to Columbia to represent thu , county in the Legislature for $3 per day and mileage. What will llfty more years bring about?
