THE CANDIDATES HERE. The Hive Candidates for U.S. I Senate Entertained a Crowd Last Monday. . The first installment of candidates for Uiis season entertained an audience of 2f>0 people in the Court Mouse here on Monday. The crowd though small, was composed of rep resentative men from every section of the county, and gave close at ten tion to the speeches. The candidates for United States Senate were all present, viz: Congressmen Elliott and Latimer, State Senator I). S. Henderson, ExCongressman .1. J. Hemphill, Ex Governor John Clary Evans and for* mer Congres^n. in, Col. (Je<>. Johnstone. Toe meeting was called P> order at 11:1ft a. m. Mr. Scarborough slated that as there is no opposition to him for re election he would yield his time to the Senatorial candidates. He spoke principally on trusts and made prac tical illustrations. He criticised Congressman Latimer and read a letter from Dr. J. W. Stokes, now dead, charging Mr. Latimer with ri ding on free passes. Mr. Kvans' speech was pronounced a strong one aiu. he evidently had some warm r>n [i[n?ru:i s III I lit," I'.rUWll, Mr. Latimer came next and apparently made a satisfactory oxpla nation of the charges made by Mr. Kvans. Ho said he had on two oc casions brought parties of Northern congressmen So th. on free trans portation furnished bv the railroads. Out he did so because ho saw no harm in uceeptin<j such eourtosios on trips of this kind when lie was trying to help South Carolina. Mr. Latimer though only a plain farm er as he called himself is a j/ood speaker and handled himself well. He made some witty retorts that the crowd seemed to enjoy, lie too had friends in the crowd and ex pressed himself as much gratified at his prospects of success. Hon. I). S. Henderson came next and delighted his audience by his good humored and pleasing speech, Undiscussed the trusts and tariIT, claimed to be the friend of the peo pie and ready to sm*ve thorn in the United States Senate. He declared that all the intellect and ability to serve does not rest with his competitors, but that others were probably as aole as they. Mr. Henderson too made friends by his speech and expects a L'ood vote ill th#? p/in n t v Tnc last speaker was Col Ceo. Johnstone who was at a di sad van tutf? in being the last speaker as the audience was tired, but he charmed his hearers. Mr, Johnstone is a fine speaker and in addition to elegant diction ho gave the audience some strong argument on tariff and ship subsidy questions with telling effect. Quite a number came forward to shake his hand at the close of his address, lie has a following too. This ended the speaking, and late in the afternoon the candidates were sent over to Myrtle Coach, return ing Tuesday morning they wimii aboard the Stoa nor Uutli and left at once for Georgetown whore they spoke yesterday. A few gentlemen here entertained the candidates, both here and at the Heach and chartered the boat that carried the gentlemen to Georgetown.
