June 19th 1902 1 To the Public. , As 1 have been frequently askeil ' about the matter lately, b\ friends 1 from different sections of the i county, 1 wish to state, that I will not be a candidate for re election to the House of Uopre sentativos in the approaching primary. 1 assure the people, that I appreciate to the fullest extent , the high honor, they saw lit to confer l upon mo in the past, and no man is i more willing to serve the people to the best of his ability in any capnei- I ty, than I; but for reasons, not nee- ' cssary to be stated here, 1 have decided not to stand for re-election i at this time. ] II II. WoonwAHh. | 1 Safe to Trust Them. c A correspondent in a commimica . tlon printed in this issue, in rein- < lion to the stock law question, uses 1 the following language: 1 "Will our law makers lay aside , their judgement for that of the iir norani class, and let them decide, as i they (our law makers) have recent- | ly done in regard to the building of the court house and jail?" Of course, by the term "our law- i makers", he is not referring to the Legislature as a whole, so much as he is to the delegation of Horry county in that body. Hecause iis , understood by everyone that a me.is- < ure like the court house and jail ae1, ( is purely local in its nature, and the delegation of the particular county . concerned, is allowed as a matter of course and as a matter of courtesy, < to got through as many measures of this kind as the county happens to need, provided always that the meas- . ures sought to be passed are ipurely i local in their nature, do not .ilTed. 1 the public policy of the State, and are consistent with the constitution. So this is a direct attack upon llcr ry's members of the Legislature Was Hie enactment of a law pro viding for a new court house and jail, encumbent upon our i members in the Legislature? This was certainly the case. Grand jury after grand jury had reeommen ded the erection of a new court house, as had, also, the judges of the courts. The first step had to be taken in the Legislature The recommendations of the grand jury made it the duty of the delegation in the General Assci >ly, to take this step at once, -for 'these rccoinmcnda tions of the grand jury we?*e scrv ~ ,1 ll . - C. uu upon me ouue ^owaior and upon the members of t.e House, l>y or der of the court. Is it right to leave such matters to the decision of the people of the county? No argument is necessary to convince any reasonable man that it is. The question of whether the new court house shall jo erected or not, should be left entirely to those, out of whose pockets the money must eomc'to bear the expenses An ' 'ignorant class" will not decide this question of a new court house and jail. The people of Horry county are, as a general rule, as inteligent as any people on the face of the earth. We are willing to leave to them the decision of any question tending to the progress and upbuild ng of the county. TheV will /in. ? %t " * "* v*v' cidc all such matters correctly. The movement looking towards the building of a bridge across the Little Pee Dee at the point known as Potato Bed'Ferry, should be encouraged bv every one who is interested in the business growth of Conway. The establishment of a bridge there, will bring to Conway the trade of the people of Briton'sNeck, and we think this would be no small item. On next Saturday there is to be a joint picnic by the people of Horry and Marion counties. They will come together on the very spot and the matter will be discussed in general. Wo hope that this picnic will be well attended, and that every body will lend their influence in every wuv they can to secure the building of this bridge. The nearest point for the trade of the people of Briton's Neck is Conway and this bridge will secure it. B. It is useless for a cor 'cspondent to got mad and stop his subscription, just because the edit >r sees lit, to cut short a controver ^V when he deems it to the best interests o the readers of the paper Lo do so. flu does not spile the ed tor by so doing, and if ni.y injury is done at all, it falls upon the. correspondent himself. Thinks It a bad Suggestion. Ma. ( -i unreasonable as to request any far iner to take the burden of keeping up his stock As we are already undergoing the heavy burden of fencing our farms, u very expensive and cruel law. Fencing their farms is a desperately bad job. I Jut if the people of the county would properly fence theii farms and not lepend upon their guns, dogs, family and occasionally a few rads and pine brush, as a number of our people do, affairs would be in much better condition. Again it is boing whispered in the sirs of the people that whether the stock law is favored by more or less the people, yet it will be tested at the ballot box. Will our law makers lay aside their judgment for that of the ig norant class of people, and let them decide, as they have recently done in regard to the building of the court house and jail? The editor seems to be a watch man on the tower; over ready t< sound a note of alarm when dangei is ppproaching. That's right! Fight on! Don't court popularity at the expense of truth. "Walk worthy of the vocation wherewith you are called" and a "generation yet unborn will rise up and call you blessed.'' The sentiments of this scribe arc very clearly set forth in an editorial in your issue of June nth, in which reference is made to the travelling evangelists who are not connected with any organized body of christians. It is not the Spirit of Christ to persecute but to abstain from every appearance of evil; and wr know that if the Almighty had beer pleased to recognize a loose and in dependent method of soul saving lie would rot have ordained organ izod elTort through the death of Hi: Son. That which seeks to disorgan izc certainty has a tendency to de moralize.
