buildings are a necessity now can
not be denied by those who have
observed the present conditions and
facto in the matter. If these buildings
are a necessity now, what will
they be ten or twenty years from
now? And what will be the consequence
if they are not erected? If
the buildings must be erected, it is
well to do it now, for there is no
question mat we need them. The
tax will not be hard to pay, because
it will be small, and we can arrange
to have plenty of time to pay it in.
Think over these facts and vote

The health of our town is fairly
good, but the territorial area over
which our generous-hearted und progressive
physician, Dr. II. II. Burroughs
travels, is so extorsive that
he is kept very busy.
We have a more than three hun
dred pounder in our town in the
person of Mr. John Henry Stroud,
one of our clever merchants.
J. C. Bryant who has been in poor
health for some months is gradually
improving, a fact which his many
friends appreciate.
The truck farming interest is in
creasing here, anil we are informed
that vegetables arc now bringing a
good price. The probability is that
the acreage will be considerably increased
in another yeai s time.
It is the general opinion ol the1
people of this section, that the in
creasing popularity of our Congressman,
tlic Hon. K. H. {Scarborough j
throughout the district, oilers ver.y
poor encouragement to aspirants to
that oHice to oppose him.
The Methodist church here which
has recently been coiled inside has
been much improved in its interior
appearance and comfort.
We need a beef market lor the
benefit of the town and ifurrouuding
community. We make this state
incut with the hope that some en
tcrprising butcher may be led to
meet the demand for the material
advantages of all parties.
It is rumored 'hat there is a pur
pose to establish a liquor dispensary
here, but we do not want it, and
will not have it unless it i.-, forced

FIRE ON SUNDAY EVENING.
It Caught From a Stroke of
Lightning, and Totally Destroyed
two Livery Stables,
and a Dwelling
House.
During the thunder storm on last
Sunday evening, the livery stables
at A. \V. Jenkins Son caught on
lire from a stroke of lightning and
were burned to the ground, the tire
spreading to the Livery and Sales
stables of \V. K. Dorter, just across
the avenue, and finally to his cot
tago nearby, all laid to ashes de
spite the efforts of a crowd of men
to stay the ilamos. The (<wclliug
house of Supervisor Joseph Todd,
was in great danger of the fire as
was also one of W. li. I ewis's now
cottages Fortunately it was rain
ing, and this combined, with the
work of a bucket brigade, saved the
last mentioned buildings from catching.

household furniture, and all of his
stock of horses, buggies and wagons.

supposed to have been killed !>v the

to steal clothing belonging to

Some of the trunks were opened and
robbed of their contents.
To The Farmers of Horry.
On account of long and severe ill
noss, the Horry County Farmer's
Institute was temporarily abandon
ed and much disappointment was
manifested by some of our most
progressive farmers. As there is
evidently a strong desire for its
continuance, I thought it would be a
good idea for all interested in the
in the welfare of our community and
the prosperity of the people, especially
the farming class, to get together
and arrange for a permanent
institution. The object of said institution
being to improve the condition
of the farmers in general by
discussing the different methods of
agriculture and. adopting those
which are found to be the most
pract ical and cc momical.
I understand that there will be a
fourth of July picnic at Myrtle
Beach and I would suggest that the
farmers meet there on that date and
discuss the matter in general We
hope that, all will join in with us.
