We here have reference to the custom of meeting the candidates at the different precincts with all sorts of petitions and requests for he p. Sometimes it is in tho interest of the person soliciting aid, sometimes and perhaps more often, the money is requested in aid of some person whom the person soliciting repro scnts. The objects for which subscriptions are asked in this way are numerous. This bleeding of tho candidates, sometimes reaches such an extent, that when the candidate returns home, he finds that he has given more to charitable purposes, while making the canvass than the actual necessary expenses of his campaign, that is, unless ho counts the money spent in this way as campaign penses. No matter how low the stale o" a candidate's finances may be, he is met at almost every cam paign meeting, by some person, (often more than one) asking sub scriptions for some object, uboul which the ca didate knows very little or nothing, and mil er the eir cumtances, he is almost comp died to give liberally in response to eacl request. The amount given to just one person, of course is i.nt much but by the time tlq? candidate gels around the cob ty, the many small amounts he 1 given, adde 1 to gether, make uite a sum. more than many of ihe candidates can well a Herd, ? We wish to do ihe candid los all j the good wo can, and we would like to sea this system of begging stopped, or at least some little cheek placed upon it, so that the money which is spent in this way need no longer e added to the already large expenses of a e>m a gn we would never have written this arti cle against the prac ice, if we had thought such a practice was right. On the other hand, we are compelled to s y tli t it is not right, it is nothing short of imposition of the worst kind. The candidate is not in a position to refuse the demands made upon him. Those who choose this , time to request contributions from him are taking an undue advantage, i s. aud all fair minded people rhould condemn the practice. The actual necessary expenses of a campaign are large enough without adding this additional outlay. And besides the cash that the can didates pay out , they aro obliged to lose their time and neglect their business at home. The candidal* who happens to become the choice of the people, and is elected to office, finds it hard enough to have to make this outlay, but what is t so result in the case of the one who runs and it n< t elected? We believe that all the right thinking men of t he -one ty, will agree with us that the prae tice of begging at campaign meet ings, a hardship upon the eandi dates, and should be discouraged by ; * all means. when the person asked to contribute 1 is able to do so. and the request i ?
