Robt. H. Soar boron oh for his unfit" ino zeal in securing an appropria lion of one hundred thousand dollars for a pub'ie building at that mm. _ t?! 11 i * ? ' |iim u. i nr (Mil providing lot* l ins public building passed tlie House of Representatives on April Uhth. It is said that it will pas.: the Senate without trouble. Florence has Ion# wanted this building and now she lias it. It means something for that already thriving little city That the strawberry is a profit able crop in t his section of the coun. ty, is proved by the experience of many who have tried it for the past few years. This fact, we would like to impress upou every fanner who owns a farm suitable to the berry and conveniently near a shipping point. The farmers of the county should dcversify their crops more than they have been doing. Many of them depend too u ueh upon one thine. Strawberries shipped from this point this year are bringing good returns. It should bo an object lesson to those who are well sit uatcd for raising them. To Our Correspondents. A word of caution to our corres pondents may not be out of place. The County campaign will soon be on hand and it ia natural for each of our correspondents to wish to advance the interests of his favorite candidate in t..columns of the pa per. There are other subjects which, now and ' 11 n, call forth a controversy, wr.'un. .vo are compelled to shut oil' rather than to let it become tireing and annoying. We wish to state again, as we have done time and time before, that that the county paper is no place to try to get redress for personal wrongs, either real or fancied. It is no place to air personal malice and hatred. When a man deems himself injured by something his from... t s i i ?\.nvr? uKiii iiui iu or none, and do coines mad over it to such an extent that he cannot refrain from person al abuse, lie is not (it to write, an article for a newspaper, lie should express his feelings private ly, face to face, with the man who has offended him. I?y attempting to abuse his fellow in the newspapers, the public become disgusted with both. We are not charging anyone with having written anything wrong. We only give the warning that we cannot publish arj tides of this kind. The duty of the correspondent of a county paper, is to send in the news of his neighborhood. And he should be sure to send in only such news as is worthy of publication News is what is wanted by the pub lie. Personal abuse and malicious defamation of others is cared very little or nothing about. We want to make the Hkuai.d in dispensable to the? reading people of the county during the campaign, and we always endeavor to get the news at any cost -not matter for cign to our interests in which the popple arc interested very little, but local and State news, ai d especially that of a local nature. We need the help of our cor res pendents in our efforts to give the people u good county newspaper, and we trust ttiey will put forth their best ell'ortsto fee lid in matter of the right kind. We agree with " Forecast'' that Harrison A1 ford is the man for fore man of the chain gang. "Forecast" has declared himself on the court house and jail question. We have given the matter some con sideration and we think the present court house and jail sufficient for present needs. Times are hard on the farmers and they cannot afford to be taxed ?o death. Mr. Kditor, don't you remember that only a few years ago the court house was repaired at the public expense? Old Veteran. Cool Spring Items. The health of the community is good with few exceptions. Rooth and daughter from the Poplar section attended services at Salem church last Sunday as did also G W. Sessions of Adrian. Mr. Editor, I think it would be well to publish the Act in regard to building the court house and jail if you have space, so the people will be prepared to vote intelligently. The people will elect a good Super visor and I think we may all safely vote for a new court house and jail. rnrraer. Booth Budget. Wo have not had many changes in this bootion since our last writing. Kditor Herald, the readers of the paper and especially the votcrs'aiui tax payers of the county I did not mention Mr. \V. J. I lowell, the road overseer, in my reply to Mr A1 ford's card Not because Mr. Howell w is not as guilty in ref erenee to the work on the liucksvillc and I'awJey Swamp road as Mr. AI ford was, but because Mr. Howell had not used the county paper to throw bitter insinuations at the road hands and the ci'i/.ens of this neighborhood who opposed that unneessary and expensive piece of work. Air. \V. J. Howell was the (irst man to lay an obstruction across this stream, it is said, for the purpose of backing water upon his grandfather's farm, lie failed to turn this stream of water which runs across the public road. Mr \V. ,J. Howell did not compose the article that appeared over iiis name in the 11 Kit.\I.n s >mo time ago, but wo trust that the hidden man was right in saying that Mr. Howell did not approve the plan of unloading malice through the conn ty paper, which he never read until about two weeks ago. and we sinleerely hope that he will never try to | unload anymore of it across that stream. Mr. Howell failed to turn the water of the stream against the I course of nature, and so it remain led for several years until Mr. liar j rison Alford bought the place, or a portion of it. lie tried the same i trick and, after deciding it too great a job for him, he sought the posi tiou of guarding the chain gang Now, this matter of t he public road at Mr. AI ford's was in (piestion for years between Mr. Alford and the road overseer, because of the water being backed upon the road by the obstruct ion Mr. Alford hud put in below, Ha d year the inve nt Count v Su pervisor ;i|)|?i>iiiIcd Mr. Mi ley Me ('ormick overseer <>ti this section, and lie lold .Mr. AI ford <1 few inontlis ago, that, ho was going to rem >ve lIn* ohst I*iiction aii I let t iie water oil. Mr. Alford with an eye to Inisines. al (Hire wrote a letter to the t'oni. tv Supervisor and made charges against Mr. McCoriniek, reeommen (lino Mr. W. Ilowell for overseer, knowing that Mr. Ilowell was the only man oil our soetion who would make the road hands help to do this piece of work. So, Mr. Supervisor discharged a good overseer, doing wood work on the roads, just he cause he was ;;oin^ to open that obstruction, and appointed a man. who, when the hands were warned out to work some of them told '<iin that the work would not do, he replied that the Supervisor had told iiirn to warn the hands and do that work,, (which the County Supervi sor denies) and ho was going to turn that water or break up I lorry County. And Mr Alford with the chain gang and \V. .1. Ilowell with the road hands did the work which was to cut a bio ditch along the side of the road from the branch through an old high, sandy liold for several hundred yards, and haul the bank down and till up the branch All failed to turn that stream of water, the banks broke and washed away in places, and it-remains in that condition today, only a portion of the water can got away, on account if the obstruction below. Mr. Ilowell will not work any more on the road nor will he lix the place, and the County Supervisor will not have it done, though the road is in a dan gcrous condition. This same Mr. \V. ,). Ilowell said that he had lived all his life in Iiu k"s township and was very much interested in the public roads and the prosperity of the oeoole. A man to have tin? interest of the pub lie and surrounding county in vie w, and then to say to the public that he would turn a stream of water up a hill or break up llorry County, shows something wrong and probably it would spell malice or some thing worse. It is plainly see) that conic one is not doing his duty, when the grand jury recommended that the County Supervisor take immediate steps to open and remove this obst met ion. I hold no malice against any one, but when people enter into such measures as this and lay aside rea son and judgment, I deem it my du ty to defend the right, as every true and honest citizen should, further, Mr. Howell says that he cannot sit still and allow a misleading statement to go out uncontra dieted, and a friend and neighbor ...? . \ 11 ? uinii'|in !(.;< I. I llilVt' HO (IOUOI that Mr. Howell is beginning to get restless, after throwing away mos* ofitho time for this year on the road at that place, and failing to accomplish his aims, now seeing that it is going to oe disclosed to the public. 1 admit that I only wrote a short sketch of the matter before and did not represent it exactly as it was, but it seemed as if they were not satisfied with it 'incomplete. As 1 live near by and am a hand on this section I have tried to represent everything correctly this time.
