An extension of tho time has never done more good, perhaps, than now. when the people are cramped for money owing to tho short crops of last year. The weather was warm for the season, and thore were frequent showers, with a hail storm on the afternoon of the 28th. The train has been lute, almost every day of late, owing, we suppose, to an increased amount of freight. There is generally more freight to be hauled in the Spring than at other seasons of the year. In a pr'vate eammunication t'? one of his friends in Florence Congressman Scarborough speaks cheerfully of the status of the bill seeking an appropriation for a federal building in this city. He thinks the outlook is favorable, but Florentines must not rest easily on their oars. The offer of a free site has had a good effect upon the com nittee on public buildings. ? Florence Times. Fred Scott, a negro, lost, his life last Wednesday, Feb. 2(>th. by a fall ing tree striking him on top of the head. The deceased and Mr. S. F. j Bout ne were cutting tobacco poles 1 in Chinessv Swamp near Willow! Springs. The negro had felled his ! 1 tree, just at the time that Mr. ' Bourne's was about to fall. Bourne : saw that the tree was falling in the ! direction of the negro, and shouted < to him t.o get out of the way, but he did not move and the tree struck ' him squarely on the head. ! Coroner A. II. J. Galbraith was' called to hold an inquest, and t ho I jury found that the deceased came to his death by accident. Teachers at the Exposition. Easter has been designated as Educational Week at the Exposition, and a letter has been received by our county superintendent, from the Assistant Director General, stating , that if ho would inform him what day our people would arrive there, committees would secure board in private families, and meet, them at j the depot. On the 25th of February, death J took as its victim the wife of the late Levi Grainger who proceeded her only about 15 mouths. She leaves 8 children aud a host of friends and relatives. i OBITUARY. i Capt. Henry L. Buck was born , June2t,th. 1813, and died Feb. 25th, He had been indisposed for some time, but was able to look at- < ter bis business interests up to a i short time before bis death, when be was taken worse and grew progrcseively worse until death relieved biin of bis sufferings. Capt. Buck represented Iforry J county in the Lcgislat ure in 188G 87; , and at the expiration of bis term as legislator, was elected a member of! the State Board of Agriculture. In both capacities be rendered efficient services. Capt. Buck served through the civil war attaining to the rank of Cap tain. He was a warm friend of con- > federate soldiers, often incommoding himself to accomodate or relievo < them. It seemed to afford him pleas- ' ure and satisfaction to do so. The 1 result of the war was financially dis- ' astrous to bis family, though he did j ( not murmer or complain, but went \ j bravely to work to recoup his lost ( lost fortune. He was succeeding j very well, when about the year of i 1875 or 1876, a destructive fire 1 sweet avrav the lower mills which 1 belonged to him. Fie assisted in or^anizin^ the Ilor ry Hussars and was the company's beloved captain until promoted to , the position of major of a battalion of cavalry. He always preferred the 1 title ot captain as having earned it 1 in actual war. Capt. Buck leaves only one surviv 1 intf sister, who lives in New Yorkstate, and he lived to see ail his chil dren married and comfortably settled in this life, the youngest dau^h ter having lately married Mr. I). V. IMchardson, one of the owners and the manlier of the lower mills now known as Bucksport.
