Tiliuan in which Tilnian answers s uic !i irges made by the Times against tin: Senator From our stand point, which certainly is unbiased, we think the Sen ator has the best of the controversy. Wk have heard some complaints recently concerning the law which requires fences in 'lorry county to ' be built 4i feet high It is s uu by many, who claim that they have learned the facts by careful observation, that the law is not being kept by the people <?f the county. Tlu matter of lawful fences is always a hard one to adjust. If the people .? wish to try a change in the law they should not hesitate to make their wants known to their representa ttves i? the I .legislature. The intention and spirit of the laws in relation to the return and assessment of property for taxation, is, that all proper4y shall bo pi need 011 the books at its true valuation. The fact is that the property of Horry count}', and perhaps the same is true in other counties of tin State, is returned for taxation at scarcely two thirds of its true value. The honest man who mieht wish to pay on tlie real value of his prop erty, cannot alTord to do so for the reason that he would pay out of all proportion to anybody else. On last Friday evening there was a meeting of the business men's league and subjects of much importance to the business interests of the town were discussed bv some of % those present. The main subjec* of discussion, however, was 1 he tobacco industry and its relation to Conway as a mar ket for selling the weed It appears to u< that the meeting was proper and for a very proper purpose. The subject is one of gen erai interest to me whole town. In n certain sense every business man in the town of Conway, has- at least .should have -an interest in promo ting the growth of the tobacco business iu the town and in the county. Nearly every business man has some stock in one or the other of the tobacco warehouses and they should meet together often and talk over the best plans for the advancement of the common enterprise. While the Horry Warehouse sold a large quantity of tobacco last year, yet it did not have all the patronage it might have bad There was p entv of tobacco r used within reach of this market, to have kept both of the warehouses busy throughout the tobacco eason. Hut no of the warehouses lay entirely idle. There is no reason why Con way should not keep on growing as a tobacco market. The thing to do is to get the tobacco here and this can be done by getting to work in the proper way. Wc hope that the meeting of last week will not be the last. TOBACCO IN HORRV. An Appeal to the Farmers. In view of the condition of things at the close of the last tobacco .iea son, the business men of Conway, ir. every vocation, are much concerned I as to the future of the tobacco in jdustry in the county, on which its prospects so much depends.
