Many of our subscribers arc ow_ ino us sums, ranging from one dollar to as much as two dollars ami fifty cents. We cannot advance the paper in this way and continue the business unless these amounts are paid. We appeal to each subscriber whose dues are in arrears, to come in and pay up. We need this money and want all back accounts settled before Jan. 1st. When u man takes a newspaper from the post office and reads it, he becomes legally and morally bound to pay for it. We want those who owe us to come in and settle between this date and Jan. 1st. 'f they cannot pay the money, we will take anything we can use at market pri ees. There can bo no excuse for ar y body owing us. Who will mot pay, must be dropped from the books, as sending the paper without pay will run us into bankruptcy. We do not write this to make any one mad. It is simply a case of necessity. If you owe us wo know you, and expect you to come and pay up before the lirstof the year, so we can continue your name on our books. While the growth of the population and business enterprises of a town, and its success as a business center, depend in a ureal measure. of course, upon its situation ami otli | er natural advantages, yet this is not all that is necessary for its inntorial success- The individual men of the town, who collectively form the body politic, j 4 they men of means or not, must feel the necessary amount of interest in the growth of the town and the promotion of the public welfare. In short, the citizen* must be public spirited to that extent which causes effort to beput forth toward the advancement of everything that tends to j build up ttie town or widen the field of any of its business enterprises. Without this public spirit constantly manifesting itself, things are more apt to tend downward than upward. .Without it no matter what the natural advantages of a town or city, no matter what possibilities lie within its reach, it is likely to re main forever as it is. ' | Sometimes it appears to outsiders as if the sudden growth of a small town into a large and prosperous city, is the result of pure accident greatness suddenly oust upon it by chance. But in nine eases out of ten, a close investigation will disclose the fact that it is all due to the untiring and nprsist^ia <i 0 r?. w.uwiiv uhui v?, tire push and energy, the brain and pub lie spirit of men. As enterprise and push is i ceded for the success and growth of one's private business, just so and indeed more, is enterprise needed by all the citizens together, working together as a whole for the good of the whole IJy working together and thinking together, it is possible for the busi ness men of a town to put the town to growing, and to keep it growing. They can bring population which will be a valuable addition to thecit} izenship, and bring new enterprises which will employ thousands of bands. We advance no instances us proof of our assertion; a moment's Ijjsyjy ? ^ ^ . . a.../ reflection is all that is needed to show that what wo say is true Wo, as citizens of the town, must never he selfish. We must bo wil ling to live and let live, and never place an obstrolo in the way of now business enterprise's just because, it is not ourcipital thut is to he invested. A ways holpi and never hinder.
