During the lust campaign in the Cotigrcssiomd District, Horry county, because it had a candidate iu the race for Congress, polled a larger vote in the primary tha i it had been accustomed to cast. Surprise was expressed in some quarters that Horry, usually esteemed insignificant unless following some other county's "band-wagon", should cast so large a vote. And be itsuid to their shame, some peo pie and some papers, notably the Florence Times, particularly in its correspondence column, charged fraud and ballot b.ix stutTing. The falsity of the charge was virtually confessed when no effort was made to challenge her vote or contest tin; result. We knew all the-time that it was prejudice, and not ignorance, that instigated the charge. We had hoped that some repentant traducer of our people would at least put in a plea in confession and avoidance, but in this we were doomed to dis appointment. The charge was made that we had exceeded our voting strength. Let us see if there were ground for the charge, Census bul let-in No. hi, issued by the Census Department, Sept. 11th, 1901, gives on page (5 the voting population of the counties of South Carolina in June, 1900. Notice the figures submitted below a ?to the counties composing the Six > Congressional District, and thos taken from the ollicial returns of to primary, showing the number of . cast in each county. Williamsburg county, of course, is not wholly in the Sixth District, so the per cent age in that county need not be considered. White liallots Per County voting pop. east. cent. Marion, 3855 8146 81 Horry, 8537 2615 73 Marlboro, 2605 1723 66 Darlington 3159 2113 69 Florence, 2771 1957 7(1 Clarendon. 18(5f> 15(11 83 Williamsbg 2618 1103 Now, out of a voting population of 3537 in Horry county, there were only 2613 ?votes east, while Marion county, having only 338 more voting population than Horry, cast 533 more votes. Marion cast 81 per cent, of its white voting population; Horry, only 73 percent. The charge of fraud originated in Marion county, and hence we institute the com pari son as to Horry and Marion espc cially, the candidates being from those twocounties. Hut it will bo observed that the number of votes cast in proportion to voting popula tion was but little larger in Horry than in those counties which had no candidate. This is submitted for the edification and reproof of those who attempt to be little and slan der our county, as well as for the purpose of keeping the record straight. Also to emphasize for the benefit of the State at large the fact that tht ''Independent Republic" is capable of making itself felt, on occasions. We expect our delinquent subscribers to come in and settle up in full before Jan. 1st. Those who will not pay will have to be dropped Torn the list. I I ? I ????As population grows t!?o price ol real estate iucreuses. Lands in this county, which foi ty years ago, coukl ] b,4 bought any day, for fifty cents or | one dollar per acre, now bring two ' Or three dollars per acre, and from ! this on up to five dollars per acre according to situation and the degree . of adaptability to cultivation. There I are perhaps some lands in the county ' now, that might t e purchased for fifty cents or one dollar per acre, but this land is generally such as is | valuable neither for timber nor for . agricultural purposes, and the time lias been when thiskind of land passed from owner to owner for a mere . song. It is beyond <)uestion that good land is constantly going up in price and those who wish t(^ purchase f inning land should do so as soon as p ><slblc, if they would save money . Conway and the county generally, are making strides forward in industrial development and business enterprise This is gratifying in the face of the fact that the farmers have made short crops this year. The people over the county seem to be cheerful and the farmers will be rci <ly to lay their plans for largci crops' next year. At O.mway, improve- j a eats of importance ar; taking; p'aee New buildings are going up I and occupants are rcad\ for them t).y tie lime they are completed. Anew plant for the manufacture) of lumber will soon give employment to many hands. ? Kvkuy town in the count ry has its, share of people, who without any 1 visible means of earning a living, spend their days in idleness. Conway has her due share of course. How they live, how they manage to keep starvation from the door, no one can tell; yet, in some way they live. There can be no excuse for idleness. No able bodied man need go without work in this country. Hack of work is not the trouble. The class referred to, does not want work, it will not have work. The trouble lies in the nature of the people themselves. It is noticeable that the newspa pers that support McLaurin, have very little to say about the appointment of Ceo. U. Koester as collcc lor of internal revenue. Some of them say nothing. Others commend theaeHon in as little language as possible. Supreme Court Decision. The following decision was filed with the clerk of the supreme com t yesterday. E. Norton, B. G. Collins and others as trustees of Burroughs School in Horry county, petitioners, vs. J. II. McCasUill and others, members of the board of control for Horry county under the dispensary law, respondents. Petition granted. Opinion by Henry Mclver, C. J. Columbia I State. | It will he remembered that the petition prayed for an injunction restraining the establshmont of a dis- | pensarv in the town of Conway by the co unty board of control. Ed. J -<+ Festival at Urantsvllle. A Harvest Home Festival was held on Sunday the 27th, by the Home wood Sunday School at Gnmtsvillo. The weather was favorable, and although it was somewhat late in the season, there was a profusion of bright Autumn flowers and leaves, and the fruits, grains and vegetables would have been a surprise to one not acquainted with the products of Horry county. The school house was beautifully decorated. The music was good, the reciiauons oy uie cnnuren were well rendered, uud all those who took part in the exercises acquitted themselves with credit, making tlie atTaira very enjoyable one, A. L. O. A Jew, whoso name we did njt learn, arrived in town, driving a h >i so, one day last week, and seemed very anxious to trade About the same time thereuppoared a notice in the Wilmington Star, stating that a Jew had stolen a horse at Fayottev lie, N. C., and left for parts unknown. The description of the horse and man, a.s given in the advertisement exactly fitted the Jew a ad the h >rse he was trying to trade. Asa consequente, he was arrested by J no H. MeCaskill and placed in j el to await communication with the authorities at Fayettevillo. A telegram was received later requesting that the prisoner be held until a requisition could be obtained from the governor, lie is doubtless the party that is wanted.
