REMITTANCES For Subscriptions or Advertisements must I>? made to the Manaokr, Conway pum.ihuino comtant THURSDAY, JUNE 6 1Q01 It is said that a petition is being circulated asking the Governor to pardon Aneel Bridges who is serving sentence in the chain gang for assault and battery with intent to kill. -! 1. 1 The new stores, which will doubtloss be completed and filled with merchandise in time for the Fall trade, will bo a good advertisement for Conway. These new stores, though they may increase the mercantile establishments in the town, will not lessen the trade enjoyed by the merchants already here, but will on the otherhand, eon luce toward bringing more trade here, and in this way, will increase the business of all. Whatwewant 'o do is to cut off the trade that goes each year to Georgetown, Wilmington, Marion and perhaps other places of less importance. It is not everybody that thinks ofthe amount of trade that goes to these places from our very door. The close observer has a pret ty correct idea, but doubtless he would be surprised himself if it were ' possible for him to have it computed in exact figures. Why does it go? Let any one answer who knows. Tii.lman and McLaurin caused a great sensation by their unprece dented action of resigning their seats in Congress, and it has been the caure of much interesting reading in the newspapers. The people generally, did not look upon thoir ac tion with favor, and regarded with disgust the campaign which it would necessarily bring about during this off year. They had not much more than thought it all over and begun to settle down to a meek acceptance of fate, when, in comes Governor McSwceney and refuses to accept their resignations. The Governor's refusal we suppose, will end the matter. Mr. Tillman claims, that the governor has no right to refuse the resignation. In our opinion this is right. There is uo doubt that both the Senators acted npon impulse and without that sober and calm consideration that comes from reflec tion. Their resignations were the outcome of taunting insinuation: te me n ted and t ho campaign arranged with Tillman and McLanrin alone in the race, this paper would have supported Tillman. Taking everything into consideration. Til In an must he our choice of the two men, just so long as this paper claims to he democratic. Generally speaking, the tohaceo crops are looking fine in almost every section of the county where tobacco is planted, Lute planting on account of the cool weather caused some uneasiness tin* first of the season, but all this has passed away and encouraging reports are brought in now from many directions. If the wet weather which has been pravailing in some places for the last week or two does not holdout too long, the prospect Is good for a large crop all over the county. ICvery leaf of tohaceo that is raised this year on I lorry soil should be sold at Conway, the county seat and not at points outside of the county, as much of it was last year. The business men of Conway have labored long and patiently to make the towm a good tobacco market- They have spared neither time nor money and are still trying to reach greater results. Their success is testified to by all those who patronize this market and look at the results they obtain in an unbiassed and unprcju , diced manner. Citizens of this county should patronize homo enterprises, simply he cause it. is home, and not ask other reasons for doing so. Hut the truth is, this market will he prepared this year to do more than it ever has in its history in the way of selling tobacco at the highest prices and taking care of the leaf until it is ready ' for shipment. The managers intend ' to have it so that the planter can , never gain anything by sending his '< tobacco to a foreign market. < _ I Bisco Briefs. Hot weather. Mr. L. M. Speaking of the dinner, it was more than that?it was a feast.
