Death of Conductor Slocumb,
The friends of Conductor J. C.
Slocumb were shocked to hear of his
sudden death from apoplexy on his
train between Loris and Chadbourn
last Saturday
He ate dinner at his home here and
left on the passenger train at 3:40 s
in apparent good health. At Loris f
he complained of feeling badjand told \
the engineer, that he had a strange \
dizzy feeling in his head. At Mt. 1
Tabor, '.he next station after Loris, s
lie became unconscious and would t
have fallen upon the floor had he not t
been supported. A doctor was call
ed at Mt. Tabor hut he never regained
consciousness and was dying
when the train reached Cha.lbourn.
He leaves several children and a
wife who was prostrated with grief
when the sad news reached her. The
bereaved family left with the remains
on Monday morning for Clin- I
ton. N. C.. their former home. We
arc informed that Mrs. Slocumb will '
move back to Clinton in a short time, i
Capt. Slocumb had many friends
in Conway. His genial disposition !
never failed him and once known he
was never forgotten. The Atlantic
Coast Line has lost a faithful ser
vant.

Marion District Conference.
The above named body lias come
and gone. The benefits and pleas
ures distributed between the mem- 1
bers and delegates of that body and
the people of our town seemed equal
ly divided. The sentiment of each
host seemed to be that he received
the pick of the body.
The information which was given
us thiough the deliberations of that *
body on the questions of education '
and missions should be of incalcula- s
ble hem-tit to us all as a community. 1
And following so closely the union 1
services recently conducted in our t
town, wv should earnestly endeavor (
to reap every possible religious ben- o
efit which may have coinc to us t
through that gathering
1- rom all that we could gather of
the impressions made upon the ?
minds of our visitors those impressions
were only of the pleasantost
character, and as a community we
can only look forward with pleasant
anticipation to the glad time when
the Marion District Conference will ,
coino once more into our midst. .
