We have been informed by inem bers of our town council that the privilege tax ordinance to which sonic editorial reference was made in our last issue, is not intended t<? restrict in any way the sale of fruits , and vegetables in the town by the farmers of the county. The ordi- ' nance if-strietly construed, according to its broad language and gener i al terms, would inelude our farmers as we stated, .Mid from certain things that we saw and heard, we were led to believe that the town marshal was enforcing the yrdinanco against all classes. We have since been informed thai the marshal was acting under a misapprehension of the meaning and spirit of the law. The spirit of the section of the ordinance referred to was to compel the payment of a tax by venders of fruits, pinders etc, on the streets who fellow that occupation dailv asa means of making a living The town authorities did n ?t int"tul it io apply to farmers sellino their fruits and vegetables nor to lisherinon selling | lisli from the fisheries, and they will see that the law is not enforced against this class of venders in the future. They can sell their produce as heretofore where, when, and in such ipiantities as they please There is one restriction however in regard to pork and beef which we mention lor the benefit of those who may wish to sell pork and beet in the town. Pork may lie sold whole, but cannot be cut and sold in small <piantities without payinp tIk* market license. Hoof may be sold by iho quarter. 11 it is to be sold in smaller quantities, the li cense must be oaid. As to all other produce the ordinance will not be j construed oeeording to its let lei. and the farmers may bring their produce to town and sell it as they please. We acted a little too hastily per haps, in expressing our opinions on the subject, before consulting the | members of the council, but we I wore misled bv the action of the , town marshal, as to the. construe I lion placed upon the ordinance in question, and we cheerfully make this correction, if correction it nta\ be Called. we rNeeii ? I'nssenger I rain, The present schedule nr the Atlantic Const lane does not suit the wishes of a majority of the people i of Conway and the traveling public generally. We need two trains on the road one for passengers and one for freight. We think that Conway is a town ol sullieient business importance to demand another train and we think also that the amount of business done by the railroad company here and at other | oints along the road should be enough to justify the expense of running an. other train. Every traveller from this point to the outer world knows the tedious delay he is subjected to. If lie goes by iail, ho must wait all day at Chadbourn, unless he happens to be going by way of Wilmington. If he goes by water the same trouble meets him, ho is compelled to lose a day, perhaps several, before he gets away There is a remedy for all this, and it lies in the running of a daily passenger train, not a train which carries both passengers and freight, but a tiain exclusively for passengers. No time can be saved as long as the train has to stop at each little station to put off and take on freight, sometimes losing a half hour in shifting. The freight brought to Conway is yearly increasing in bulk. Every year larger and still larger quantities of cot ton, turpentine and tobacco arc being shipped away. The business of the railroad is increasing. Why then should we not require that they give us a train with a | better schedule, and better ears. The ears on the road, as long as the train carries both freight and passengers, cannot be kept decent and lit to ride in. Many towns of less! importance than Conway aro enjoy-! ing quick passenger trains and Unpeople have clean, decent cars to ride in when they travelTo want a thing simply, is useless. But to want it and determine to have it is what generally brings results. Wo can get another train on our road by showing to the railroad company that we need it and that we are of right entitled to it. It wo make the proper showing, and there'sou) reason why we shouldn't, persistent efforts will bring the do sired results. To The Deaf.
