An Alarm of Fire.
On last Friday the roof of the jail
caught on tire from a spark, it is
supposed from the northern chimney,
and almost everybody in the lower
end of town gathered at the jail yard
in some alarm. No ladder could be
found long enough to reach the liie
and a hole was made through the
roof from the garret. The Fire was,
soon completely extinguished and
the damage repaired in a very few
hours.

A Thief Escapes.
A slick thief made good use of his
shrewdness one day last week to
escape from the clutches of our town
marshal, Mr. W. M. Parker. He
stole two watches from the shop of
Mr. Parker and some clothing from
Mr. Olc Harrelson. Parker discovered
that his watches were missing

appeared at his place the evening
before. After his arrest he claimed
to be sick and wanted the consent of
the Marshal to go to the Kingston
Hotel to rest. The Marshal finally j
consented, took him to the Hotel i
and lodged him in room No. 14, a.i!
he thought until ho could stop down
the street to make an investigation
concerning the stealing, leaving
a man to watch the front entrance to
the hotel When he returned room
No. 14 was entirely vacant with the
exception of the furniture?the thief
had escaped through the back entrance
during his absence.
