Short Sketch of the Life of Our j Popular Lieutenant Governor and Our Next Congressman. Robert 15. Scarborough is the youngest son of the late Rev. Lewis Scarborough of the South Carolina Conference. His mother was a daughter of William Ret lien, of Lit tie Rock, Marion county, lie was born at Chesterfield court house, S. C.. Oct. 20 1801, His father was supcranuatcd in 1870. and settled near Mullins, where the subject of this sketch was brought up, on rented farm, as a "poor [farmer boy," without opportunity of education until he was nearly grown. Heattended Mullins academy in 1870 and 80, after which he worked one year on the farm, and then began teaeh,.,.1.,...! S. C., and formed a copartnership with Judge .1. T. Walsh, which continued until Dee.. 1888. lie has since practiced alone with muci. success. Mr. Scarborough has never been a politician. When, the democracy was divided he was classed with the conservatives, but has always voted for the best men for office, whether conservative or reformer. In 18i)<> he was one of the most active friends and supporters of Col. ft. T. Stackhouse for congress in the sixth district, and was a hearty supporter of the late Governor ftllerbc for comptroller general. lie is distantly related to Col. Stackhouse, and the Stackhouso family in Marion county are his friends and supporters almost without exception. In 18h0 Mr. Scarborough was urged by both factions to stand for election to the State senate, and was elected by a good majority over "Uncle Jerry ' Smith a very strong man. In the senate he had the respect of his associates and his loyal support ol comptroller general Derham in his race, before the General Assembly for tlic place; he now lills, made Mr. Scarborough many friends who will support him gladly now in his race for congress. He was elected president pro tern, of the senate in 18!)H during his absence and without his knowledge. Upon the death of Governor Kllerbo he succeeded to the office of Lieutenant Governor and has served with sat'sfaetion. Mr. Scarborough is the pride of his county and Horry will give hiin a solid vote in the coming primary. His people know and honor him. and no man is more beloved than he is. He is a democrat of the strictest set and is in thorough accord with his party. If elected to congress he will labor for the best interests of his dis trict and the country at large, and his supporters believe lie has the ability to render efficient service. In this campaign he has made friends wherever he has gone. He is standing on his merits alone and will. }n our judgment , be our next representative in congress. Mr. Scarborough has always been neutral in politics; having taken but little interest in the factional fights of recent years, and it was with some reluctance that he consented to enter this race for Congress In this race he has the almost unanimous backing of the people, of this his home county where lie is idolized by men of all factions, lie has lived in our midst during his whole professional career, and our people know him to be a man of spotless character and of many worth. This district could not select a more able and worthy man for Congress, and we believe the voters will so see it, and act accordingly on the 28th. The crowd was com fortably seated and the meeting was opened by prayer by the Kev. Mr. Caincs. Scarborough was next introduced who was greeted with cheers as he appeared before the people Many cries for Scarborough with such us there is our next Congressman, and in fact wo have never seen a candidate receive such ovation before. He made one of his brave manly speeches and was cheered from beginning to end. He will receive the entire vote of this place, Norton next plead his cause in his usual shack nasty way, he said he had no agents out electioneering for lain and it was proved by a man in the crowd that there was two at this place last Saturday for that purpose with their bottles of whiskey and half drunk. ICIlcrbc next followed and was the last speaker he come fourth bussing like a hornet pouncing Norton with the usual charge of forgery in the contested election of lH'.tK in regard to the votes cast in the second S.
