A PARTING WORD. 1 sever my connection with the Holt it v IlKitAi.n thus week having sold it out entirely to Hon. J. A. MePermott. who is too well known to need any commendation at my hands. In order to spare my own feelings 1 wovdd say nothing, hut re tiro silently, hut fooling a sense of gratitude to those who have stood hy me, 1 feel that common courtesy makes this demand a pleasing duty. The paper should luwe the generous support of all Ilorr.v people and in retiring I urge for my successor an enlarged and increased patronage. Having lived lave for twenty years, where I expected t die, the circumstances of life have < rdorod me elsewhere and 1 shall go hem e cherishing nothing but the l.i !o -t feelings for all. The paper has never missed an issue since it was lirst organized in 1880, and will suffer no interruption hy my retirement. Trusting that the degree of prosperity now enjoyed may continue to grow and develop, and that the people I am leaving may seize the opportunities now presenting themselves for their industrial development, 1 hid you adieu, E. VV Noi.i.kv. IJ loop is reported to have been shed in the African war. The limit of the ultimatum having expired war was declared to exist and the Uoers commenced at once to march on Ladyxmith, where a battle is reported to have been fought. A gentlemen of mature years, a farmer who has been successful and a man who weighs his words, said recently that "the present-time is in every respect inorc encouraging than he has ever known." This opinion seems to be general and every department of trade seems to be on the up grade. Eaitii in the progress of our affairs in Luzon and about Manilla has Ix'cn badly shaken since the doctoring of the dispatches became known several weeks ago and our people are losing faith in the matter so far as support of the government$*policy is concerned. The Iloer war is the main subject of attention just now and the sympathies of our people will go out for them at their efforts for independence. \V k are really glad Unit Admiral! Tiik war iu South Afriea in some respects is similar to that bein# wu#ed in the Philippines and simi lar to the wars in which (treat Urit ain has ever been en#a#ed. The war with the American colonies was brought about by oppression which became unbearal)! . and so with tin*] Moors, they have borne as Ion# as endurable and rather than sutler longer have notified (front Ih'itain to halt. The issue can have but one end. The Hritons are stron# enou#h and numerous enou#h to subjugate this little republie and will do so. but with a fearful loss of life. Mow Ion# the stru##le may last, may be with the Moers, as with the Philippine islanders. We can see no hope for the Trunsvaul, save in a general up rising of Croat Hrituin's dependencies and then there is poor probability of such a thin# happenin#. Our sympathies are with tin ho who eon tend for liberty and a home form of government, and yet the prospect of a peaeeful solution of the African trouble is not favorable to those who have laid down the #a#o of war, because they fell compelled to do so. Dispknsauy matters at hcadquarl ersare#rowin# lively of late. There have been several removals recently, the latest. Mr. I). A. (!. There appears to be a kind of monarchical form of government a Chinese custom to decapitate all who are in the way. or whoso removal is desired. The customs which prevail at headquart el's :is Mr Ouats states them, ;iih1 he talks as though he knows what ho is talking about. will find poor favor with the people, The prohibition party will ho vastly strengthened by statements recently made regarding tho conduct of a (Tail's in the big bar room, and unless they can bo sot aside, Senator Tillman will bo needed to champion its cause. If tho rottenness and incompetency charged prove to bo true, the efforts of the great originator may not be powerful enough to carry it through next year's campaign successfully. A History of Marion.
