brought to the attention of the
authorities at Washington.

guns will be lircd from the State
House grounds at Columbia on receipt
of the telegram announcing
Dewey's arrival at New York. This
custom will prevail throughout the
country.
Porto Rico is in a bad condition
The destruction of the fruit crop upon
which the poor classes depend,
argely for food has caused great
suffering and the people are dying
every day in Ponce from starvation.
A large majority of the people are
without means and (ma find no work.
Tiikuk is great talk of the democrats
carrying Ohio. There is al
ways big tallc by both parties before
an elect ion, one side doing the shouting
after it is over. We don't look
for it, but should such an event oc
cur, it is likely that the administration
family at Washington will have
to vacate their premises.

miners to woik at Cartcrvillo,
Illinois. Thirteen armed negroes
come and open lire on the whites.
The consequence is t! at six negroes
are killed and three wounded Clover
nor Tanner orders out several
companies of miiitia, but the Sheriff
says they arc not sufficient to quiet
the matter and the situation is critical.

in the Philippines at being held
back, or rather placed in obscurity
by being sent to some far southern
island, doos not accord with the old
lighter's idea of war, though it may
be what General Otis wishes to do
with him. General. Wheeler'f ex
pcrience in war was to tight and
that continuously and constantly
from the beginning to the ending of
a campaign, and to place him at the
front means that work will lie done.
We thought that an inactive position
would be distasteful to him and
are not surprised that the old man
is dissatisfied. Put him in front and
the commanding general will either
have to advance his headquarters or
direct hi s fighting far from the rear.
Tuk loss of Mr. Childs will be felt
as a loss to the prohibition cause all
through the State and he will be
missed at the head of the column,
where he has ever been found contending
for the faith that was in him.
Mis death will not relax the efforts
of his friends in the great cause so
dear to him, but rather inspire them
with renewed determination to accomplish
the right, or imitate their
lamented chieftan, by dying in the
harness. The^State can ill afford to
lose such men at such a time. Not
only does prohibition lose its foremost,
staunches!, friend, but the
State a useful, public citizen.

Steamship Larger Than the
Great Eastern.
The now White Star steamship
Oceanic, the largest vessel afloat,
from Queenstown, arrived at NewYork
last week and debarked her
passengers.
A big crowd of those who had secured
passes to tin- dock and a bigger
crowd which was kept back of
the fence, cheered tIn* new steamer
as she crept up the river and swung
slowly into her berth. Coining up

place. Docked, she filled almost the

The Ocennic's time was six days
and two hours. She is the largest
vessel over built. She was launched
at Belfast, in January. Her dimensions
are 704 feet lon^, 72 feet beam
and (18 feet depth, with a draught,
liolit, of 22 feet and loaded, 32 i feet.
She registers 17,000 tons. Her engines
were designed to develop
000 horse power. Her coal capacity
is aVout 0.000 tons and she consumed
about 500 tons of coal daily. She is
ringed with t hree masts and is equipped
with two funnels, each of twenty
feet in diameter and SO feet above
the tire grates.

J. H. Tillman's Latest.
Col. James 11. Tillman of South
Carolina, has asked the presidents
to authorize the organization of an
independent company of Indian
scouts for serviceih the Philippines.
It is proposed to make Mr. Tillman
who was colonel of the First South
Carolina regiment, during the Span
ish war, captain of the company and
Joseph II. Woodbury. "Hole in the
Day," the chief of the Chippewa In
dians of Minnesota, llrst lieutenant,
and sonu member of the regiment of
"Hough Kiders" second lieutenant
It is said that many more than a

The Theatre from the Inside.
That there are live thousand theatres
in America, and that one million
and a half people attend them each
week-day night, spending seventy
millions of dollars a year on theatre
going, are the surprising facts with
which Mr. Franklin Fyles, the dramatic
editor of the New York Sun,
will open an important series in the
next issue of The Ladies Home Journal.
The series will be called "The
Theatre audits People." and will
run through seven numbers of the
magazine, lavishly illustrated with
pictures made by twelve dtlTereut artists.
The articles will treat of every
phase of the theatre, the play and
the actor, from the inside, and will
tell how a theatre is managed; the actual
money which plays have made;
how an actor is trained and what the
actors are actually paid: how a piay is
written and what t ho ant hors receive;
how a play is rehearsed; the first
night of a play; how the actresses
"make up" and what they use; and
in a minute way the two last articles
will show what goes on behind the
scenes on the stage during a performance.
It is a curious fact that
this will he the first time that the

The death of Mrs. Hlackburn, wife
of the ex-Senator, in the midst of a
heated political campaign, will disturb
his program somewhat. Mrs.
Hlackburn died at Versailles last
Suuday.
MEMORIAL SERVICE.

Mr. I J. (I. Collins paid a loving tribute
to the saintly dead, his remarks
being well adapted to the oeeasion,
and in which he urged the emulation
of the example left us by the
departed. After singing ''We Shall
Sleep, llat Not Forever," Dr. Norton,
who has been Superintendent of
thi' Sunday School for a number of
years, reviewed the life of the dc
c used, lie spoke of her constancy
to duty as an ollicer in the Sunday
School, her consistency as a member
as the church, and dwelt pathetically
on her last hours here, Kev. J. W.
Klkins, said that he had only known
her a few months, but felt that he
could fully endorse what had been
said. A few brief remarks were
made also by Mr. E. W. No)ley as a
tribute to the many noble qualities
>f t lie dead.
A solemn stillness pervaded the
entire building during the exorcises.
With some few exceptions,
the members of the family were
present. After the singing of ''The
Christian's Good Night,' the large

service encroached too far upon the
time to admit of the regular morning
service.
Robbed the Grave.
A starting incident, of which Mr.
John Oliver of Philadelphia, was the
subject, is narrated by him as follows;
