Tiikkk is ;i disposition to hold the Democratic National Convention as early as February. Chairman Jones will be homo from Kurope soon, when a conference of lending men will beheld with this end in view. Tiik Dreyfus court proceeds daily, with every point favorable to the prisoner. The French government and the French army are on trial, not Dreyfus, and to do otherwise than to acquit him, will be to cover themselves with shame. The world has already acquitted him and some who sought his ruin have been disgraced already. Tn v. necessary complement of ten thousand volunteers has been raised and exceeded by one thousand and another call for ten thousand addit ional is to be made at once. There will be but little trouble in getting all the men needed, but, it is a pity that these brave men should have to die, many of them, in a cause con demned by a large part of their country. General Otis has not tilled up the expectation of the public and the call for his removal is too strong to remain unheeded much longer. If his position is as favorable now as in early February, we fail to see it, the reports do not show it. If Wheeler were in command it would bo did:. He laughs best who laughs last and before next year's campaign shall have opened many others who will care to indulge a hearty laugh will be following his example, lie got away from his environments and was better prepared to take an honest view of the situation and seeing the matter in its true light has declared himself accordingly. With all its money the republican party will find it the nflfdost (iir)il rif Ut iivifti.iu.ii tr. .-...11 ? "h"" v" 1 ??*..*.: IW jlllll through next year with the Philippine war hung to it. The administration sees this, knows it to he true and every effort will be made to subdue the Filipinos as speedily as possiblo as soon as the wet season is over. The continuation of the war another year will defeat the republican party and they know it. Tiikke seems to bo a very noticeable indisposition on the part of the Southern people to volunteer for the Philippine war and those who are offering their services, prefer the carrying of swords to rifles. The second call for ten thousand is to be made mainly cn the New England, Middle and Central Western States. Had these States been represented in the war as already waged, there would have been aery raised against the Administration similar to that heard in the West and North West which has furnished the troops and ? . When the election was held last year it was supposed that the term was for two years, but it has developed that the election must be hold aiinu ally and we really believe that it is unwise to make a change so soon, when no reason exists for it. We have a plenty of good men for these positions, but that is no reason for making the change, and we most urgently request our fellow citizens at the polls to day to ask the old board to hold over Can you do any better? We are fortunate in having at the head of our municipal allairs an at torney of large legal learning and and exceptional business qualifications and it is earnestly hoped that his serviees may be retained for another term at least The councilmen are all young men of means and business activity and who have the best interests of the community at heart. Is there any good reason why they should be changed? We think that you will agree with us that there is not. If there has been any opposition to the management of our municipal affairs, could a new board expect to make it less? Consider these things which are surely worth your consideration ami let us with a great degree of unanimity ask the present board to serve us another term. We are enjoying a degree of prosperity hitherto unknown and everyone seems to be taking a good natured view of the situation which presents itself to us. IT. 1 taker, of South West township showed us Saturday a can full of Ilies that he had caught in his tobacco crop Mr. Raker says he takes a tin can about 2-1x30, several inches deep, puts 3 pints of molasses mixed with 1' gallons of water, into it. This hesels in the tobacco patch, and the odor arising from this preparation attracts the tobacco Hies which generate the tobacco worm. One can of this simple preparation is said to protect several acres. Mr. Raker says by using this his tobacco has not been bothered at all by worms, Kinston, N. C., Free Press. A Narrow Escape.
