The Italian government asks for an investigation of the lynching of her subjects lately in Louisiana. Mr. Eliliu Root, of New York has accepted the war portfolio. General Alger is pleated at the appointment and congratulates the new Secretary. Lynching doce not seem to abate the worst of crimes, Late papers furnish the most harrowing crimes and the blood runs cold as we read them. At various points in Michigan, General Alger will receive ovations as lie returns home. Elaborate preparations have been made for his reception. The American and British governments who have indulged so much in love-making for the past year arc raising a question about their Canadian boundary. The eagle and the lion will settle this matter peaceably. i Tim'policy of the coming campaign was tolerably well outlined at Chicago a few days ago. Democrats of imperialistic ideas will find no footing on the Chicago platform, in fact, any ideas not conforming to the Democratic policy of "DO" will feel lonesome in next years convention. Genkual AluKit's retirement from the war office is not considered at headquarters from a .vant of fitness for office, but on account of his close friendships for prominent men not in touch with Mr. McKinley. The deposed Secretary of War, will more than apt be a lively figure in next years politics. It appears as though it will be difficult for General Otis to relieve himself from the embarrassing'position in which the newspaper representatives have placed him, in charging that correct news of affairs in the Philippine Islands is not given to tho people of this country. If the charge is substantiated, General Otis, or whoever is to blame, will suffer the consequences. Let the people have the unvarnished facts, 1 % i " guuu ur uau, and tno best is bad enough, yet the public will be satisfied with nothing less than the facts. Evert man anxious to see our town make even faster and greater strides towards its upbuilding, will put his shoulder to the wheel and keep the car of progress in motion. We are and have been on the move now for some time and the progress made in the past year and a half is most gratifying to us all. The tobacco industry has already .surpassed the most sanguine expectations and the second year will impart even greater zeal to our people and there is no doubt, but that the ouan tity planted the first year will treble Itself in the second. Confidence on the part of the people is the only thin# needed to assure success. He true to one another, true to your home interests and this tide of progress will roll on and on and increase as it rolls. Do your part. However small, do it and do it well. "From the voiceless lips of the un replying dead, there comes no word; but in the night of death hope sees a star and listening love can hear the rustle of a wing. " The above language, unsurpassed in beauty and richness was used by Robert (5. Ingersoll a few years ago in a funeral oration over his brother. What star ditl hope see in the gloom of death? The rustling of whose wings did she hear? Did Robert Ingersoll live a hypocrite and die surrounded by a eloud of doubt which is unsatisfying to those who believe, that behind his profession there, was something st ronger to trust and lean upon No, there is no ray of comfort left by him and he has gone out into the great beyond to try the unseen realities of another world. Had he been conscious of approaching death ?perhaps? he would have left something more tangible than a star, or the rustle of a wing to hinge our faith upon. "We have sold many different cough remedies, but none has given better satisfaction than Chamberlain's," says Mr - Charles llol/.haucr, Druggist, Newark, N. J. "It is perfectly safe and can be relied upon in all cases of coughs, colds or hoarse ness. For sale by Dr. E. Norton, druggist. Thk suppression of the news from the seat of war will not be tolerated by the people, neither will the people bear forever the whip and lash of monopoly, but rather rise in their might and by their ballots not bayonets?say, this thing has gone far enough and must change. Tt is written in the books, the press is proclaiming it from every quarter, every breeze is wafting it to us?the spirit of centralization is weakening, and just so sure as the stars shine and moons wax and wane, just so sure will the people condemn this war administration at next year's election. It is not simply Dry an, though he is the standard bearer. He is bit a man, but a well rounded man, who has the people with him and they will stand to him in this crusade of right against wrong. Laugh if you will, decry lJryan as much as you will; yet he is in the right and the stars will fall before the principle of government by the IUW?0.. *.011 l.n ? 1 Iwl^iv. 11 111 uc nui rcmiiT^U, K. For sale by Dr. E. Norton. The. following article will appear in the Southern Tobacco Journal's South Carolina special edition, which circulates largely in foreign coun tries. "A new tobacco market that promises great success in the near future has been started at Conway, S. C., in Ilorry county. The first sale of tobacco at the "Horry Warehouse" was made on the 27th, July. Colonel Garland E. Webb, the great auct ioneer, singing it otT. Capfc. J. E. Coles, late of Winston, is manager of the warehouse. Capt. Coles has had a long experience in tobacco ou the Danville and Winston markets and with Colonel Webb as a running mate, he will bring the Conway market rapidly to the front. The Warehouse building is 80x120 feet, with all of the modern improvements, lights, doors and conveniences gen erally found in a first-class warehouse. Horry county is quite oxtensive, large quantities of its land uemg oi a roiling nature, makes it a very Hue tobacco section The county has planted this year at a low estimate iihOO acres. The crop almost entirely upon an average is excellent. Conway has daily trains, also a line of steamers, plying between here and Georgetown, one of the boats pass weekly going up the Wae eamaw river about fifty miles. The climate is very healthy. The ocean is only twelvo miles distant and will be reached by a railroad, built by Conway citizens, within the next ninety days. We have fine artesian water, line banking facilities, as she has one of the best banking houses in the State. To overy acre of tobacco planted this year, there will be two and possibly three, planted next season. The entire coun t y almost is virgin in soil and all things considered we arc are forced to believe that Conway will soon be at the top rung of the ladder as a first-class tobacco market, ihe iarge force of hands now in the grading rooms and the immense amount of tobacco being delivered at the Warehouse, is putting new life in this grand old county by the sea, that has maintained and held her independence since the day's of the revolution. In the <l70's" she saved the Palmetto, and in these days of Tobacco, she will save?make herself. Investigate llorry and her tobacco industry. It will imu (<> .1? on '' I '?J J"** Millions Given Awny.
