The dispensary bill when brought up will likely provoke greater discussion than any bill which may be considered during the sitting of the legislature and adjournment which is hoped for soon, may l<c delayed indefinitely. The entire proceedings thus far have been harmonious and it may be that the minds of our law makers are in such a happy name as will enable them to.discuss even the dispensary question in a mild mannered Way, fSo many Inquiries have cr^u to this office of late regarding the Spivey McCaskill articles, that we deem it justice to all concerned, 1o give the matter in full, with the exception of Mr. McCaskill's article, which appeared in this paper only a few clays ago, and which it does not up pear necessary to repeat. The article of the "Washington correspondent to the JVcics (Hi<f Courier, referring to the same matter is produced here in answer to the demands made upon in.. Governor Ellerbe in a late address to the general assembly, lays considerable stress on the deficiency in the State treasury and suggests that our legislators in the making of appropriations, exercise very great caution. Our people complained greatly oi their taxes at the last payment and it looks as though they will be still larger the next time as there are some appropriations that must be made. This all appears strange reading in the face of the late Governors message, which said, "I leave the treasury to my successor unembarrassed and not owing a dollar" and yet the new Executive finds the State short of funds and advises the most eco nomical distribution of the States money.
