CHAPTER XIV. vksvn itit. We nelected a lino -.lay ^.January 18tk)to make tUo ascent ??f Veatriius. We hired carriages to take us an hlg?i as they eoul1' go, ami made the last quarter to halt mile on the "funicular9' railway, to the top, within two or threo hundred yards of the era tor. In leaving Naples wo drove through three towns or cities ail <*omiecteri so closely that they seemed a port of Naples. The last of these towns, now known as Resina, lies right at tlie foot of Vesuvius and covers the ground formerly occu pled by the ancient city of Herculaneum, whlcii was destroyed liy the same great eruption which burled Pompeii on the oHier side of the Mountain. In driving through Kesina we seem to lie driving i over solid rock, and note it is the same j used in paving Naples and the neighborI ing cities. We find this rock was once tnol j ton lava ami nasuch overflowed and destroy I cd llerculaneum, now beneath our feet. We see seme workmen blasting rock and are told they are excavating, and slowly the work goes on, of uncovering lierculaneum and hei treasures and curiosities and it Is necessarily expensive and destructive to articles exhumed, (n going through the museums, very much Is seen from Pompeii and very little from Her culaneum, because so large a part of the former city has been excavated and so little of the latter. This Is easily accounted for when wo learn that when that ter rlble volcano destroyed both cities, the "melted" rock ran down the mountain side on which llerculaneum was situated, while the wind blew the ashes In the direction of Pompeii, so that one City was burled under hot ashes and the other under motion rook and there Is no trouble excavating Pompeii with ordinary sjiov els. As we ascended the burning mountain. iinriitr tn? > I..f f?..n i.i. .. , >-r?'? lHIUilll RRIl"!', the panorama, as wo looked buck, Increased io bounty, The view of Naples, this bay the lovely islands and the rich country surrounding Naples 1* enchanting. Wo soon pass out of vegetation and us we look around us and up the mountain aides wo seo groat fields and masses of melted lava th at look as though it might have only cooled off last week. Our turpentine friends will understand it, when we say that it looked as though thousands of turpentine distillers had just had the tine black dross from their line strainers em tied on the side of the mountain. The lava s ems to have run down in folds. We wore informed that the fresh looking Holds of lava were the result of the last grout eruption, which took place in 1H72. It surprised us to see how inunv nconln lived on the side of this sc. tiling mountain, apparently contented and unniindful of danger. When we step into the ear and start up the funicular railway at an angle of about Ou degrees, we feel that the snap ping of the iron thread that draws us up would mean instant destruction and our heart rises in our throat. The view is magnificent, but as we begin to smell the sulphur smoke, we conclude once in a life time is enough to go through this expert ence. There is quite a walk after leaving our car to the great crater and most of it through a kind of ashes and cinder which makes it hard. Here and there wo see blue smoke coming up through the cinders and find the earth is unbearably hot very close to the surface. We are almost afraid to step heavily, for foar wo may break through into the stomach of this great furnace. We approach as near the edge of the crater as wo think safe and try to look over, but the great hole is so full of smoke we can see nothing else and have to put our handkerchiefs to our noses to prevent suffocation. All the way from Naples, beggars and peddlers of Vesuvian curiosities and souvenirs beset our way and ran after our carriages, and we find their species on top of the mountain, trying to sell us coins held under the earth until they arc twisted with heat, or, they offer to take our copper coins and bring them hack from the edge of lite crater in a twisted and burnt condition for a small fee. They were driving quite a business in this line, until some one took the date of a coin ho sent to be heated and when it was returned, he found the coin had an cntirelj' different date This disclosed the fraud. These fellows kept n stoek of heated and twisted coins on hand and instead of going oiuuuu uuuer rne cage of the crater and heating our coins as they claimed, they went behind a hill and exchanged them for somo already llxed. It would not take very long, however, to melt a coin, most anywhere around the crater a little below the surface. Some who diverged a little from the regular path had their shoe soles badly burned and ruined. After spending about an hour on "the ragged edge of eternity," we returned to our carriages feeling as though wo were just out of the "jaws of death." Wo enjoyed the view driving down even more than the ascent. In the great eruption of the first century which destroyed Ilerculaneum and Pompeii, an eminent historian writes that night could not be distinguished from day for the space of nearly threo days, the air being so tilled with smoke and ashes. A large part of Pompeii has been uncovered within a few years, and the work of excavating still goes on. One interested in such things may spend a week enjoyably wandering around the streets and among the walls of this once burled city, studying the architec ture art and mnnnnr nf no. of the people who lived hero 2000 years ago. Here and there we see evidences of grunt wealth aud also of such moral corruption as to causo us to say no wonder Pempeii met the fate of Sodom. Bodies distorted in all shapes, expressive of the great agony in which death was met, have been exhumed. In one place u lx>dy with a large amount of money and jewels Is found and they say it was a jeweller tryI log to escape the fearful destruction; but *j)nges of interest might bo written about Pompeii we must leave It. Dear Sirs?I wish to give my testimonial in regard to your valuable medicine, P. 1\ P., for the cure of rheumatism neuralgia, dyspepsia, ontousness, et?\ In 10G1 I was attacted with bilious muscular rheumatism, and have been a martyr to it ever since. I tried till medicines 1 over heard of, and all tlio doctors in reach, hut 1 found only temporary relief; the pains were so bad at times that I did not care whether I lived or died. My digestion became S( impaired that everything I ate illsagreed with me. My wife also suffered so intensely with dyspepsia that her life was a burden to her: she would ho confined to her bed foi weeks at the time; she also suffered greatly from giddiness and loss ol sleep. Some time in March 1 wa.advised to take P. P. P., and before we (my wife and I) had finished tin second bottle of P. P. P., our diges. tion began to improve. My painsubsided so much that I have beer able to work, and am feeling likt doing what 1 haven't done before ii a number of years. We will con tinuo taking i'. T.
