JUNE, 14, 1894. Mr. J. Durham, writing from Irvington California, says, semi mo your paper, our fruit crop is encouraging. It is stated on tolerable fair authority that ex-Congressman George 1). Tillman will enter the lists for Governor. It is to be regretted that Senator Vance's bones have been disturbed. He had given directions to his son, that his body should lie by the side of his first wife in the Cemetery at Asheville, which was done. Since thee. Mrs. Vance his surviving widow has bought the most eligible site in the cemetery, and without conferring with any of the relatives had the hody re-interred there. Hearing of this his son had the body again dis-interred and re-buried in the family plot. The campaign which is to bo opened at York on the 19th bids fair to become lively in the unusual short time that is allowed for this purpose. Many candidates will be before the people soliciting their suffrage, While they will have to hurry over the field in the little over a months time allotted them, we will have to await developments which will no doubt rapidly occur. You will notice Uo* ill.. mot iuurj<cuuuiiv;c uuy la ^ivtiii tu Conway and if the orators who gather hero on that day should, instead of giving us a rehash of what we have been used to of late, give ub some reminiscences of Valley Forge and Yorktown we would be agreeably surprised. STATE CAMPAIGN OPENED. On the 7th, inst., the State Democratic Executive Committee met in Columbia and adopted a resol ution permitting any voter who would take the pledge to participate in the ap proaching primary. This was doubtless to remove the restrictions of those who voted for Weaver and who are now willing to pledge support to the Democratic party. The committee arranged a schedule for campaign speaking as follows: York, June 19 Chester, do 20 Lancaster, do 21 Camden, do 22 Sumter, do 23 Chesterfield, do 26 Bennettsville, do 27 Darlington, do 28 Florence, do 29 Marion, July 3 Conway, do 4 The appointments extend to August the 8th, and will be published in good time. A Kolhitc Itufllnn Beats nil Old 31 nn and then Murders His Sou. Birmingham, Ai.a., June 12.? Shortly after 8 o'clock to-night P. G. Bowman, a lawyer, and the leading advocate for lteuben Kolb for Governor, shot and almost instantly killed Eugene Jeffers, the twenty* one year old son of Thomas Jeffers, ex-mayor of this city, in a bar room. Early in the evening Bowtuau and Thomas Jeffers had a dispute and Jiowman, who is about G feet and weighs about 200 pounds, hit Jeffers, who is about 5 feet and an old man and weighs about 104 pounds, twice in the face. Young Jeffers, hearing of the occurrence, went to see Bowman and ask for an explanation. Those who witnessed the tragedy refuse to talk and if any words passed it was impossible to get particulars. Kxcitementis very hi^h. Bowman was first taken to the city prison, but is now in the county jail, TRIP TO THE OLD \VOIU,I> HY JOHN R TOLA It CHAPTER XTl. KoMK TO N.M'I.Ks, Having u long days travel Itefore us we concluded that a continental breakfast of bread aud coffee would be too slim and made a special order for uu American breakfast of steak and eggs, which were well prepared and relished and after running the blockade of servants by feeing seven of them we bid adieu to the "Pension Michel" and took un express train for Naples. We passed through a beautiful country of valleys, hills and mountains and some of the old castles and towns jKTched on the mountains and hill tops looked as old as the mniintninM ?? " locations seemed to have been chosen on account of their strong position and the difficulty attending their attack in the days of neighbor-warfare. The valleys are waving with some kiud of small grain. The country, as we approach Naples is the richest we ever saw, if the soil can be judged by its looks and by the appearauce of the l?ea"tiful grain fields looking like great green carpets stretched out about as far as tho eyo can teach Now we run through immense vineyards and splendid olive groves and everything looks prosperous except (hi people.. We know that in a country so favored as this naturally and with such bright skies and delightful climate, there is something wrong on man's purt or it would ho a paradise on earth, instead of being poverty stricken as it is. What is tho trouble, that about nine tenths of these people barely ex ist, and do not lice ? Three of the troubles have been tax-ridden, landlord-ridden and priest-ridden. After an all-days ride we reached Naples about dark and were driven to tho' Hotel Brittaunique" where our rooms had been engaged. We had heard the remark "See Naples and die" and had read a noted w riters suggest ton to change the saying to "Smell Naples and die," but we had not anticipated any tiling so lovely as Naples appeared to us this first night of our arrival. The priucipal business part of Naples as well as the ffjualor part is down near the bay, but a short distance from the water the hills forming tho outer portion of Naples rise in a klnd'of semicircle and the healthful and the most beautiful part of the city is tho outer edgo of tlds semicircle. It was here our cab brought us aftei a hard climb and pull for the horses ittul we found comfortable rooms and good fare. We were fortunuto enough to secure rooms with a "Vesuvius and bay view" and as wo stood on the little portico at our window and looked on tho gaslit city below us with tho most beautiful bay in the world at its feet and at the ever burning top of Vesuvius only a short distance away, at the lights of the bordering towns to Naples enclrcliug the bay, we thonght a view so charming had never been even dreamed of, by us before. Aft< r "drinking in" this splendid prospect a few minutes we were summoned to diuuer and there met a pleasant company many of them speaking our own familiar tongue and as a baud had come in from tho street uud were tilling the room with delightful music both instrumental and vocal and all jolly, every face seemed to bo wreathed in smiles aud everybody at the tables as jolly as the music. It would bo dltlicult to feel blue in such an atmosphere, and If we can judge by appcurances, notwithstanding the poverty that provalls, the Neapolitans are about the hnppiest people on tho face of the earth. Even the saucy cab-drivers who may abuso you, especially If you give them too large a fee and they see that you are green, will turn away with u happy laugh or smile and go on their way whirling or singing. We have heard no music like this anywhere else. We may have heard some of the same music, but it lacked the Neapolitan life snd spirit. We met acquaintances from America we had crossed the ocouU with and after a pleasant exchange of experiences, wo take one more view of Vesuvius and retire. Naples has one of the finest aquarlains in the world and after going through It and seeing about every species of animal life that Inhabits thn w?fpr>? nf tlio ??? ?. we decided that it was a diflicult tiling for an ordinary mortal to tell where animal life begins or vegetable lifo ends. Wo saw fish or llesh thut appeared as flowers. We saw them all in their great glass houses living as they do In their Kative waters. We take a cab home and though we pay the driver an extra fee, he acts as though wo had robbed him. The National Museum at Naples is ona of the finest, if no' ih? finest, In the world. Here we see tho great collection from the excavations of the ruined cities of Pompell, Horculaneuw and various other places. It would take a week to go through It satisfactorily. We see the implements used In farming, cooking and general work 2000 yeurs ago which have lain buried over 1800 years. We see grain nud even fruit which has been buried all these years. Many implements resemble those In use at the present time. A9 much poverty and squalor can be seen in the bad part of Naples as in any city in the world. We had no taste for investigation in this line, fas tho stories we heard from others, too terrible to put in print, were enough to satisfy us. Wo wore a little rusty in statistics and wore surprised to find Naples had u population of 000.000, being tho largest city iu Italy. We are delighted with our visit here and feel we inadc no mistake in not leaving off this part of Italy from our "program," as wo thought onco of dolug, and we recommend all visitors to Italy to take in Southern Italy, especially Naples if possible. NKWTON, Aberdeen, ISrown County, (>. Nkwmax8Vii.it,Ti.a., Juno 5, 1891. Messrs. Lipoma\ Duos. Savannah, Ga. DEAR Sirs?I wish to give my testimonial in regard to your valua ble medicine, P. P. P., for the cure of rheumatism neuralgia, dyspepsia, biliousness, etc. In 1961 I was attacted with bilious muscular rheumatism, and have been a martyr to it ever since. I tried all medicines 1 ever heard of, and all the doctors in reach, but 1 found only temporary relief; the pains wore so bad at times that I did uot care whether I lived or died. M/ digestion became so impaired that everything 1 ate disagreed with me. My wife also suffered so intensely with dyspepsia that her life was a burden to her; she would be confined to her bed for weoksat the time; she also suffered greatiy from giddiness and loss of sleep. Some time in March I was advised to take P. P. P., and before we (my wife and I) Imd finished the second bottle of P. P. P., our diges. tion began to improve. My pains subsided so much that I have been anie to work, and am feeling like doing what I haven't done before in a number of years. We will continue taking 1*. P.
