Christmas in t'oinvtiy. Veritable halcyon days arc these, of C:hristiiihs week. Sunshine and gentle breezes show the atniles of stern Father Winter, whom the weather prophets have lately crown- I ed a horrid tyrant of perverse inconsistency. But thankful and glad are we for tlieso caresses of our cold and sour-visaged Wintei. Wo owe! probably to sn"b what little fun and , frolic was indulged in; and also for the attendance upon the church cer- ' etnonies. On Thursday, Friday und Saturday last, the town was pretty well crowded. I'cople from many parts | of the county came in to get their j ' Christmas fixings/' Among these need not ho omitted the mention of many, various ami sundry packages of wet goods per freight train and boats, that a Dispensary constable; might have been culled upon to confiscate. Hut most of the trading1 public that came to town remembered the wife and children at. home. Many a merry laugh has sounded and fooling heart swelled in kindly regard on account of visits to town last week. On Sunday evening there were Christinas exercises at.the Methodist j Church. The attendance was large, and the ceremonies (piite appropriate to the occasion. The music was led hy Misses-Hssie Collins and Daisy Norton. The opening anthem, i "Call His Name Jesus," was Mu't? prettily rendered. Mr. Scarborough's address on "l'caco on earth,: god will to men," was beautifully conceived and splendidly delivered. The speaker's diction and style were , especially marked. The rhymed story read hy preacher Stafford was a prettily described history of a good old lady's Christmas charities. The; exercises were closed after a short j and appropriate talk by the Superin-j tendent on Christmas charities. The bovs of town could hardly wait until Sunday was over to build their bonfires and make night hideous to tho nervous with tire-crackers, gun-, anvils, etc. Promptly at the stroke of the hells that rung in the happy day, the older heads woke up front sloop and quietly and patiently all >wed the rest of tne night to be tit 11 ivl t? i*/?i 1 K\r ?? 1 1 in ii i v?< ?' y mi iiianiiui wi i uo^? Hut ??n tho whole, Cnristmas (lay was dull and (|niet. Tho stores were all closed and only one or two could bo seen on the streets. After tho morning effusion of "Christmas i gifts!" and "Merry Christmases!" was over the regular salute of the day was, "Dull Christmas, don't you think?" or "A pretty day, hut mighty dull, isn't it?" We have a 11 lived through tho Day of Festivities and are none tho worse for its dullness. Tho town was not raised to heights of exuberance and cannot now be carried down to depths of too utter dullness, we may think. We may bo thankful for what wo have, remembering "A fair Christinas makoth a full orchard." By Tuesday the town was back in the same old rut, front which it had so little departed, and people were remarking in a rominisccntial manner how few of the Christmas drunk ' had heen seen in town, notwitfi. stan ling the amount of liquor seen to pa88 through the freight depots. P" ^ :i rh, good isJ^ffTo'ur.- , the proper sentim til express upon Christinas day, but it there is either peace- or go<d will among the politicians it is not visilyln to the naked eye ut Washington. The angry passions stirred tip by the debate just previous to the adjourn ment for the recess are still very inueli in evidence, although pr ibably four-fifths of both Senate and lion o are absent from Washington. It is dillicult for a man to feel peace and good will in his heart, when lie is making preparations to enter one of the bitterest partisan lights ever en gaged in by Congress, and that is just wluib every Senator find 1 { j>r? sotu'ivo is doing tp.dav. There is u*n elemont of uncertainty about tho visits of the IJopi'efeutativ?\s to thoir homos jus now, thatoxcit'ng much inter< st. Whether it will change tho sentiments of anv of them towards tho tariff lull remains to be seen. The Senate, although democratic by a small margin, has certainly not shown any disposition to be dictate 1 to bv tho administration, and it i* already certain that the fow Senators who have announced their willingness to champion its Hawaiian policy will find thoins dvos with the light of their lives on their hands as soon as the Senate comes together again. The House may he willing to favor the administration by adopting the McUreary resolution providing for an investigation of the relations of the Inst administration with Hawaii, without touching upon those of th>> present administration, but it may lie set down among the certainties that an overwholiiiimr m?i ! n-I f *..f f-> " J " '1J the Senate favors Senator .Morgan's resolution, providing for an investigation of the whole subject right up to date. This resolution has heen approved l>y the Sei.ato commit lee on foreign lit Rations, of which Set ator Morgan ia (.hnirnyiii, although it is known that <' 1? ^ I >i.?1 i Sis Somebod ht m - a I \ or 'apin.l t. 11 i 1 ! 111: 'f HT citizen's c<)ii>^^^^^^Hii.> House and wherevot^^^^^^^^p<ule of the and telegram priiitod several about alleged plot to U: ^p^h<' t'loveland children is actually seriously discussed l?y men who ought to have better sense. All of which is calculated to increase the number of crunks svbo write threatening letters, and ! lie pay of private detectives, some of whom probub y could trll ttie source of many of thu letters, and to disgust other people. A member of the executive com mittee of the Hi metalic League, which recently held a long secret conference hero, says tho League will take no steps towards trying to get either of the several silver hills that have been introduced in both House and Senate passed tit the present session. I le thinks that the wellknown hostility of I'resident Cleveland to such legislation and the certainty that the l>iil will he vetoed, if it were passed, make it useless to do anything in that direction. The League will concentrate its efforts upon the election of members of the next House. The urgency deficiency bill, which became a law on the day that Congress took its holiday recess, contained a clause declaring a pension to ' e a vested right that cannot bo taken away from a man without notice, but that did not detract from the iutoie.-t felt in the ease of Judge Long, of Michigan, who is suing to have his name restored to the pension roll from which it wtts dropped by Commissioner Lochren. The cage was argued at length on Friday and iSa tiiday /ind a decision is expected tins week. From several que-tions a&k d by the Judge during the argument n has been inferred by many that t,l e decision will bo in favor of Judge Long. The latest revised es iniato of tlie Treasury ollicials is that tho defloien cy under tho now tariff bill, if it be came a law as it now stands, would be $05,407,000. That is tho amount that will have to be raised by inter mil taxation of some sort. XO'I'ICK.
