Burroughs High Sohool opened last Monday. Mr It. it. Clark is principal; Miss 1.11 tie Mayo teaches the primary and music departments. Thirty*three scholars havo boon entered, seven of whom are boarders. Applications have been made by other boarders; several will come in next week. Notwithstanding the hard times there is a prospect of a successful and prosperous years work. The free school taught by Miss S. T. Sessions is going on at present also. She has a tolerably full school. It will be finished soon, and the primary department of the High School will be filled. o U. S. Deputy Marshal Uruton made a raid out in the western edge of town last Tuesday night and captured a moonshine still in full blast. It is a most ingenuous affair. Invention must certainly have a stepmother out hero somewhere. The kettle is a three or four gallon pot with a tin lined wooden cap. The worm is a lead pipe coiled in a small home-made tub and connected to the pot by an iron pipe. It looks very much like a fair sample of Tillman single star could be made of it, if the Georgia connoiseur, Brtiffy, is right about that brand of liquor. The still is in jail. Joseph Hoaty, colored, is also in limbo. SharilT Sessions returned yesterday from Savannah, <ia., bringing with him the notorous Kb. Iluggins. Iluggins has been living in Hul iock Uounty, Un., for about throe years, part of the time working for a man named Ryan. .He assumed the name of William Strickland and gave a tolerably fair history of a family in his neighborhood in 1 lorry us that of his own. His only child is a daughter. Some time since, she married a Georgia negro. Hugging and the negro, a few weeks ago, had a falling out. Hoggins hunted the negro about with his gun and scared him off. While in hiding from desperate Kbene/.er, the negro's wife, Abo's daughter, met her husband and told him how to get rid of the old man. She told that Eb had poisoned a young man named Rest over in Horry and had shot the constable Kent to arrest him and that she thought the constable was dead. The negro went to Ryan, Hoggin's employer and gave awav the story. Ryan wrote to Sheriff Sessions for particulars and, receiving the necessary papers, arrested Huggins Tand longed him in Savannah jail. That is the story of Kb's betrayal and arrest. There is a sealed sentence here awaiting him and any number of indictments, lie seems to have been tolerably <juite in Georgia, save for his fuss with his black son-in.law, through which he was betrayed and brought to justice. Sheriff Sessions and Mr. A. L. Lewis left here on Monday's train for Savannah. This is the same fellow, for whom there is a sealed sentence waiting and who is to be tried for shooting Mr. Lewis in the legs, in August 1890. Mr. Lewis, it is remembered, wa? laid up for a long time on account of his wounds. The circumstances of the shooting were these: Hug gins wa8sent up to the higher court by the Trial Justice and was being taken to jail by Deputy Mishoo and Mr. I<ewis. They stopped at Huggifts' brother's homo to allow him to tell his family good bye. Huggins found opportunity to grab a gun and run. Deputy Mishoo and Mr. Lewis ran around the house to stop him. As he turned the corner, Mr. Lewis was shot down. ML Lewis has been in correspondence with different parts of the country during the Inst thres year trying to find Hoggins. It is noi positive that the one arrested in Sj. van mill is Iluggins but it is reusona bly certain. Mr. Lewis has gone tc Savannah to identify and Shorifl Sessions to bring the desperado, if it be he. PlUtSON ALS. Mr. and Mrs. T. F. All tbe excursions, except ono, have been mere moneymaking affairs, ami mostly patroni/ed by those going tc town on "anti dispensary business," before the 1st of .Inly. There lias been none since. How "those young folks" manage to exist without com ing more in contact with one anoth or, only an extremely busy fellow can at all comprehend. The writer certainly cannot. It has been my observation that without the elbow touch, and the fellow feeling engendered by frequent contact, the''society," young people are apt to drift apart into lit" tie "us four and-no more" rings. This has to some extent been the case in Coiway but not so much as one would expect from the amount of "non-intercourse'' existant. Distinctions may bo found to keep people apart as well as like feelings, thoughts and purposes to keep them together, and they may he as easily found if there are persons of the subtly critical typo to enter the wedge of differentiation. Wrong conceptions of the facts of individual dif ferenccs, characteristics or eccentricities, as you please to call them, will stifllo sociability. Pleasant companionship and good feeling cannot live in the same mind with obtruding and intruding gossip. Kather a prosy sermon, my reader may well say, with little foundation to build it from.
