The report of a most revolting crime comes from Marion County. Mr. Hanks, an elderly mint nnd night watchman at Dillon lias been murdered by liis wife. Mrs. Hanksj is now in jail. Editor W. II. Wallace of the Newberry Observer lias been elected Prof, of Mathematics in Columbia Female College. From Charleston comes tho news that lawyers have been sent to Judge Bond to try to get an injunction against the Dispensary law going into operation till it lias been adjudged constitutional by the Su preme Court. IIow it will turn out 140 one knows. Public opinion in Washington is exceedingly strong against those responsible for the pension clerks having to 1130 the old Ford Theatre. Somebody is certainly responsible for criminal carelessness and that somebody should pay the penalty. An ininstigation is now being made by a coroner's jury and tho testimony taken on last Monday certainly shows a bad state of affairs existing in one part of the pension bureau at last. Tim. bodv of J. A. Chapin of South Caro.ina has been selected from the twenty odd dead over which to hold the inquest. The testimony shows that it was well known that the building was unsafe, even dan gcrou8, that Chief Aiitsworth was perfectly aware of the fact. Nunc of tho clerks had dared to make a suggestion as to the safety of the* building, for such would have beon worth their positions. One of the witnesses said that tho feeling of the clerks for Chief Ainsworth was that of abject fear and he was cheered by the audience. The clerks seem mostly to have families and to depend upon their salaries for bread. A loss of position would bo ruinous to them, so they were compelled to knuckle to Ainsworth's orders. It is a pregnant fact that the general belief was so strong that Ainswoith would intimidate the clerks, that Secretary Latnont wrote a note to the coroner telling him that none of the witnesses need fear loosing their positions bv testifvincr before the inn? v J" J Several times during the examination of witnesses, the audience, composed chieftly of deportment clerks, expressed its bitter feeling against Ainsworth, by applauding remarks of the witnesses. Finally feeling - m* ran so high that there was a perfect tempest; cries of "M#rder!" "Hang him. ullang him!" wore heard from a dozen throats; but the outburst was quieted by ouT of the jurors Mr. Warner. The investigation had to be adjourned. There is certainly something rot-' ten in this business and people uro watching with great interest the verdict of the coroner's jury. tinilivnnts SiiiiUu* Sellout Assocint ioii . The second meeting of the Cialivauts Ferry Interdenominational Sunday School Association was held at I,iiko Swamp Church oil dune 3rd, and 4th. After tlie devotional excr cises, Bro. .1. II. Mis hoe, township j President took the chair and asked the Secretary to call tlie roll an 1 read the niimftVs of the last meeting. Only three Sunday Schools were represented. By (piestious from the chair it was ascertained thai these were "evergreens;" that is, each had ; met faithfully every Sunday and had done the best work possible under all circumstances; each school had used the literature of its Church. One reported that it had to discontinue the use of the Lesson Helps in j the Bible class for luck of necessary funds. The Association elected Sisfcr L. B. Barnhill as its presiding ollleer. No further change was made except the ollices of Secretary and Treasurer were combined. In response to the President's call, Bro. Grainger came forward with a good Sunday School Speech, which was well received by the hearers. I Af er this the Association adjourned for public services. On bill id ay the 11 h, a large tiu ( dionce was at the Sunday School Mass-meeting which was conducted by Sister L. B. Barnhill. Sister Barnhill taught from the blnckh ?ard: her j?lan was new to most of m;, but all seemed pleased with i.. (Jrainger again came forward with an excellent interde notninational speech. After the Pro. finished the Association adjourned. The outlook for this Association meeting on Saturday was by no means encouraging, but with the influence of such pastors and Sunday School Workers .is bless tins part of the country, the time is not far dis taut, when all the schools will march under one banner, enlightening the world in the cause of Christ. skcuktattv o Sunday School Program. Washington Letter. From Our Regular Correspondent. Washington, .June 11, J803. There are times whan entire continuities remain for days in a a t( st of semi paralysis on acccymt of some j stupondious and '.lorry fying public castrophe. Washington has app.tr j ently had more than its share of such periods. For instance, t hat : which followed the first arrival in the citv of the dead and wounded from the first battle of Mannassas; that which followed the assassination of President Lincoln !>v .! \Vilb.?o ..J '' ' "??> | Booth; tliut which followed the I shooting of President Garfield by i Gitoau, and that through which itj is now passing by reason of the falling of the floors of the same building in which President Lincoln was killed, killing twenty two goverment employees and wounding sixty eight more, a number of whom will either die or become helpless 1 mm . ? i? cripples or Jabbering idiots. It is now throe days since this awful Hccido it oc cured mid men and women go about their ordinary oc (Hi put ions in the usual way, but the horror i* still in their faces and actions and will be for many days to come. It is only a stone hearted person who can think of these men being compelled to go to their desks in a building, known to be unsafe for years past -it was condemned in 1800 and several times since?in order to earn a living for themselves and families, whhout becoming horror stricken. It was an inexcusable and criminal accident, j (iencrous citizens promptly contri ; jutted money t* temporally relieve i the families of the dead and wounded and doubtless Congress will some day make an appropriation for them, but nothing can restore lost lives and lost limbs. An army court of inOllirv is now inuiiirinc into tlm .io ? i --- o v,"~ "v eident, as tho building was occupied by a branch <>f ilie Surgeon General's ollice, but it is front the coroner's jury, now at work, that tho people expect a verdict that will move Congress to put an end to the o?ie r death traps still standing in Washington and occupied by government employees. The terrible disaster has had a nfost .depressing elTect upon the cm- I ployeos in the other government buif- j dings that have long been classed as | unsafe. In the Government l'rin ting Ollico, which is probably the worst of the lot, and which lias more employees?about 2700?than any of the rest, this feeling amounts .almost to a panic?the responsibility >f the failure to erect a new Government Printing Ollicc is divided with Congress by a lot of political real ' estate .- peculators who have defeated i ..Li - "I - * \n\ a mmw 10 purchase a site, 'because their ground was not selected; the money was appropriated three years ago, but is still un- ' available because of failure to agree! upon a sit . In the Patent Office j Sec. Smith is doing his best to 'quiet t ho excitement by having all j the heavy tiles ect, Mat aro stored upon the upper lloors removed to ! tho basement. The gold reserve fund of tho Treasury gained about 1,000,000, during tho past week. President! Cleveland stated to a gentlemen who made an appeal to liitn to order j an issue ?'f bonds that lie would not allow a single bond to bo issued, no matter wluit. happened, until specialIs authorized by (.'ongross to do so. The gentleman to whom he said thisi di l not understand that Mr. Clevc-j laud doubted his authority to i suc bond*, but that he preferred that ] C ngre-s should assume tho respon- : nihility of deriding what shall I e I done to relieve the financial gtringcu- j cy. W hile no one in authority lias author zed the statement, it. seems to be generally believed among thoso who have carefully studied the situation that .Mr. Cleveland is disinclined to do anything that will make the situation less g'ave when Congress meets, for fear that it would lessen the chances for the repeal of the Sherman silver law, which ho now considers good. Outside of Congress and the cabinet millionaire office holders are exceedingly rare, hut the position of tho chief of tho Bureau of Sta tistics, in the Treasury Oepartnient will he tilled dlirinff 'he rnmiiinilrv n ........ v?v,? of this administration by u millionaire, unless Mr. Worthing ton Ford, of New York, who his been appointted to I bo place, should die or resign beforo then. Mr.# Ford will have one great advantage over the ordinary oflico holder; he will have no dread of the ominous yellow envoi J ope and pay days will not seem qutie I so far apart to him as tho> do to 1 most of his c< -laborers for uncle Sam. There is nothing the matter with the Treasury building, but there is almost as much fright among its employees as among those.who work in Llio unsafe buildings, owing lo I ho impression tlioy liuvo that a reorganization of the ontirc clerical forco is soon to he made.
