(.Jen. K. Kirby Smith, tho l;i3t full general of the Confederate army, died here! to'day at 3.30 I*. M. The event was so sudden nr.d unexpected that it may possioiy prevent t?m* jsoutlitrn veterans as a body from paying a personal tribute to the memory of the distinguished here, and Dr. (.lay lor said this evening tnut the probabilities arc that there would not be a strictly military funeral. Dispatches have, however, been sent t the : leading military men of the South preparatory to arranging for the funeral services, which have beer, appointed for Fri lay at 12 o'clock. Gen. Kirby Smith will be buried herein the city ccmetary. 1. Y. (J. Gen. Smith was a man of profound learning, whose singularly modest, quiet manner gavo no suggestion of the dashing cavalry oflicer who won his spurs in 1851) in conflict with the Comanche* on tne border under the Stars and Stripes, and led the advance under the Stars and liars with Braxton Braggin the Kentucky campaign of 1802. lie came of family of soldiers, his grandfather having fought in the Revolutionary war, and his father having distinguished himself in the second war with England. 11 is brother Epraim was a soldier too. lie foil in loading a desperate assault on a Mexican battery at Molino del Key. By one of the painful coiucdetices of the war a son of this brother Epraim was a colonel in the Federal army who might any day have mot his uncle in deadly coin bat. llo fell at Corinth in 1862. EJmund Kiihy Smith was 08 years old, and Served fifteen years in the United States army before entering the service of the Confederacy. lie rank, when he resigned his cotnmissisn in 1801, was that of major, and ho entered the Confeder ato army a? a lieutenant colonel of cavalry, llo win severely wounded in the battle of Bull Bub, but in the 1802 campaign he was again at the front and did brilliant service in East Tennessee and Kentucky. His most valuable work, however, was done while he was commander of the Trans Mississippi department, , to which he was appointed in February, 1803* The department comprised Texas, Louisian, Arkansas and the Indian Territory. There he organized a vigorous government and established a number of enterprises, the profits on which replenished the Confederacy's treasury at a time of terrible depletion. Not only did he succeed in getting cotton abroad in spite of the hickade, but lie set up factories and furnaces, opened mines, made powder and castings and other stores of which there was at the time pressing need. (Jen. Smith wjts the last general to surrender his forces. After the war closed ho be came president of the Atlantic ami Pacific Telegraph Company^ but in 1370 he found more congenial occupation as chancellor of the Univer siiy of Nashville, which five years later he resigned for the professorship of mathematics at the University of the South, which position he held up to the time of hisdeath. Farm and (fai'dcn Notes. Farms that are turned over almost every year and the crop hauled to market in timo become worn out. , Horses are human in at least 0110 respect; they do not relish a fixed ration, but enjoy a variety as well as a man. The season, the soil, the time of cutting, the kind of fertli/.er used, etc., varies the nutritive value of the hay. With a slight change in the make up of the ration, the horses will be kept in good appetite and ready for active service. When the tomato plants are fciting stable manure should he spread over the top soil, or liquid manure applied once a week. It is claimed that as fine if not | better results may uo arrived at bv sowing early cabbage in February and March than in the fail and winter. Go out to the stable some cold morning, and if yon see the horses shivering, then hitch up and go to town as fast as you can, and get some blankets for them.
