The fc'tate. Washington, March 7 C?en. Wade Hampton lias Imd, perhaps, the highest compliment paid him by the members of the Senate that could have been, paid, and he will, without doubt, remain in Washing, ton four years as Railroad Commissioner. I have the information di* rectly from one of the leading meni hers of the Senate, who has signed the paper. (Jen. Hampton, as he has said all along, would not seek an otllcc, and until today know nothing of it. The leading Senators got up a request in the Senate chamber to President Cleveland, asking him to appoint (Jen. Hampton Hail road Commissioner. It has been signed, the Senator tells me, by every Senator in the body, with the exception of, perhaps, lrby. It has been placed in Mr. Cleveland's hands by the Senators. My informant ad Is: "President Cleveland has said that ho will give (Jen. Hampton anything that he wanted. Since he would not make known a preference, his friends did it for him, and the appointment will soon bo announced." (Jen. Hampton is still here, and will remain for perhaps a week longer. k. w. .1. The Cleveland cabinet averages up pretty well in avoirdupois. The combined weight of tile eight mem hers is, according to ihe most relia hie data at hand, 1,555 pounds, or an average of about 195 pounds. Mr. liisscll is the heavyweight, tipping the beam at 325; lloke Smith is the next heaviest with 225 pounds; Colo nel Herbert, 180; Mr. Olney, L05; Mr. Carlisle, 100; Judge (Jresham, 160; Mr. Morton, 170, and Colonel Lnuiont, 150. The average weight, of the previous Cabinet was 165 pounds The two Cabinets are very similar in one important particular; the members are personal friends of the President as well as his political allies. Mr. Cleveland was very much at home ill thn rnniiniiiw nf former Cabinet Ministers; in fact they worn as so many members of bis family. There wai not the same formality about Cabinet meetings which lias characterized nearly every other administration. A member of the Arthur Cabinet who served with Judge Gresham is very curious to know if the same familiarity will exist between (Jresnnm and Cleveland as was the case with Messrs. Bayard and Cleveland. Turn About i* Fair 1'lny News and Courier. Washington, March G.? lieprcsentiitive Springer, who was one of the President's callers to-day, asked him if the rule of not appointing men who held olliec under him four years ago was to prevail as reported. The President replied in the affirmative, and when asked if the rule was indexible Cleveland responded that it would be so substantial!v. There might, be exceptional and extraordinary circumstances which might cause some departure from it, hut ho could not call to mind many possibilities to justify a change from tho policy decided upon. Mr. Springer asked if tho rule Was also to apply to fourth class pastofHces. Mr. Clevelaud1s'"response was that he had not thought about that, but he gave the decided impression that it would prevail to as great an extent as possible with tho small postmasterships.
