Washington', Feb. 27.?At the request of the committee on ways : and means'J. 0. Courts, clerk of the House oommitteo on appropriations) has submitted to the committee of the appropriations, exclusive of miscellaneous matters, made by | the House this session. It shows an 1 ^^fcfgregato of 13,733,085) and this ?amount has been increased to $519,* 273,449 by the changes made in bills by the Senate. The following is a statement of the appropriations con I tallied in the bills, according to their present status: As agreed upon in both houses: Army, $24,225,639; fortifications, $2,2i0,055, District of Columbia, $5,413,223, (conference report agreed to, but not yet adopted). As passed by the Senate; Diplomatic and collie * sular, $l,570.O-?5; military academy, $342,556; sundry civil, $43,933,175. As reported to Senate; 1 legislative, $21,908,328; navy,$22,082,131; pension, $166,561,350 (the latter passed! the Senate today). As ppssed by the House; Agricultural, $3,294; ; 300; Indian, $7,088,615; postofllce,1 $83,904,31 I; gor.eral deficiency, $21,209,638. A comparison between appropria tions and estimates for the past five , years shows that, contrary to what' has been the trenerally accepted opinion, the appropriations have ex cecded the estimates, averaging 250,000 more per annum. The i reason ffw this is found in the fact that appropriations havo been made for Indians and rivers and harbors) which were not included in the estimates. By an amendment to the! sundry civil bill, it is provided that, j in the future river and burbot work must be regularly estimated for.? The *Sla(e, The Farm. flood stock crops, fertility and in -' dustry are the essential factors in good farming. An abundance of clover, corn and i hogs arc good things to have on the majority of farms. When tho ground is fro/on hard a small lot is the best place for the horses to exercise. Kxcossive fat, especially on \oungj or breeding stock is too often a wolf in sheep's clothing. Tastes differ, hut if you aro mak- j ing butter to sell you must consult the tastes of your customers. It will pay to keep u substantial ! covering over the pastures and) meadows (luring the Winter. The condition of horses can readily be weakened by making them carry too much surplus llesh. The shortest /oad to good pricesis in having the best articles to sell; this is true of all farm products. With most 8lock for fattening for the dairy or to work, high grade are fully as good as pure bred animals. One inducement towards keeping _ i _! -1. r .i HtouK 011 wie iarin is mat an opportunity is afforded to keep up the' laud. ? The farmer that saves all of the' manure possible, wijl find it less ne- | cessjiry to pureliase commercial for- : tilizers. | The host profit can be attained only by those that arc willing to direct manual labor by intelligent! brain work. 'idie man who holds 011 to a rcgu- j lar system of farming through a series of years will nearly always 1 come out well. Where a regular system of work | is carried on it will be found that each month eun have work especially ! adapted to it, Brain is rich in bone and muscle forming foods, ah<i in addition serves a good purpose in helping to keep the bowels open. All animals of a kind in the same condition consume food according to 1 their weight, and the feeding should be done accordingly. / It is much easier to tell the farmer why ho don't succeed than to be in the same position; take hold audi make a success yourself. Some claim that it does not require any more feed to make a . pound of butter than a pound of beef, but it certainly requires more skill. A little pains taken to provide good walks will materially lessen the trouble of cleaning the feet before going into the barn or the house. The best time to clean the mud } off the horses' legs is before it is allowed to get dry; keeping the legs ar.d feet clean will prevent ( BUrttlC [It's. With the majority of western farmers one of tho most seriqus leaks is tho failure to properly gather up and save all the manure I possible. Live Stock Indicator. Clergymen, lawyers, public speakers, singers, and actor3, all recognize the virtues of Ayer's Chcny Pectoral. One of our most emii >nt public men says: "Jt i the best remedy that can be procured for all affections of the vocal organs^ throat, a ml lungs.' Pou'.trj. Millet seed is a good feed for young chickens. Have the poultry lions < low behind and high in fronj^ One advantage with poultry is the <|uick returns possible. When the eggs are not wanted for hatching, marks are useless. One advantage with turkeys is their ability to care for themselves. One advantage with the Tekin ducks is that they are very easy to confine. Pckin ducks are good layers, hut usually do not sit until late in the [ season. Keeping the fowls on hard floors will often cause thetn to have fro/en feet or legs, Too heavy feeding and want of exercise lenu to narronness among the laying hens. A house of medium si/.e with a few fowls is preferable to a large one with a great many if given a good rung'*, hens will usually pick up sulllcient bone and egg shell material. All tilings considered, the best egg producing food that can be sup plid to liens is wheat. It is an important item in the management of poultry to keep them in their own places. When plenty of milk can be sup plied the necessity for meat is largely avoided* hack of gravel or material is nearly always the cause of fowels getting crop l*)und* Sunflower sudds, fed in small quantities, impart a beatiful gloss to the plumage of exhibition ponlry* Hens should never hi; fed so wel 1 that when the\ are given a good range they will not forage a good port ion of the time. Wrap every fowl for a private customer in a pure white tn!>le nap kin and let the buyer remove it and return it with the pay. It is far easier to make the liens lay in winter than it is to find a bio market and get winter prices during the Summer season' ? ?
