This was an historic house?was built by Gov. Taylor 103 years ago. Washington dispatches say that Gen. Wade Hampton is booked for United States Railroad Commissioner, under the next administration. The salary is $4,500 a year. In this case the salary does not cut near as big a figure as the man. The County Commissioners were in session last Friday and Saturday transacting mostly routine business, hearing complaints and recommend addons as to certain roads. Joseph Todd was re elected Chairman but the election of clerk was postponed to a future meeting. We hear there are several applicants f< r the position, but know not who they are. The Commissioners representing the Stock in the W. C. & C. railroad desire the people of each railroad township to assemble in their respective townships next Saturday and consult as to tho best method to raise the money to investigate the disposition made of tho money raised by mortgage o the W. C. & C. road; and also elect delegates to attend a meeDtng in Conway on Wednesday the 15th, lost. Now is the time to consider this matter and act prudently and intelligently, or hereafter forever hold your peace.. -o President Harrison has sent in the name of Judge Jackson, Demo crat, of Tennesse for Associate Jusa # .1 r r ri r* ^ uce or r 110 u. ?->. supremo uourt in place of Judge Lamar, deceased. The President is criticized by both parties, but we confess we cannot see the occasion. The appointment is acknoweledged on all hands to be an oxcellent one, he now being U. S. District Judge for the District Ten nessee and was appointed by PresidenfjfcCleveland. We are tired of hearing and seeing the motives of the appointing powers questioned and traduced when an act is done or an appointment is made that does not quadrate with the party's political views. The interests of the country will be best subserved and promoted when appointments to high and responsible positions are made not cn account of the appointee's political affiliations, but on account of his intelligence, ability and competency. The newspapers have not yet completed President Cleveland's Cabinet for jiim. They have assigned La mont to the war department Carlisle to the treasury, Herbert to the navy. Isador Straus to the po?toflGce and Bayard to the State. They insist that, despite his many denials, Don. Dickinson is to he the next Attorney General. They also put down Gove?nor Peck, of Wisconsin, to the interior, and make Ex Governor Gray, of Indiana, Secretary of Agriculture. They aay that in the event of Dickinson's absolute refusal to enter the Cabinet W. L. Wilson, of-West Vir ginia, will be Attsrney General. . / ; ' 1 Gov. Boies of Iowa has declined the portfolio of Secretary of Agriculture in President Cleveland's Cabinet. o Judge W. V. Allen, Populist, has been elected United States Senator from Nebraska, the Democrats vo ting for him. Gov. Tillman and Staff will attend the inauguration of President Cleveland and appear in the procession mounted. o An engine on the C. The cold in the Northwest has beon ;norc intense in the last week than it was during our exceedingly cold spell. In Michigan last Saturday the niurcury was JO degrees below zero and the snow drifts as high as passenger coaches. o The anti option bill 1ms passed the United States Senate and now goes back to the House for concurrence in Senate amendments. The probability is that the hill will pass and he vetoed by the President. Whether it would be of any practical utility to the agricultural interests of tho country is mixed with grave doubts. A Misuse of Terms. Bilton? It is a great misuse of terms to say a man is the architect of his own fortune. Chilton? How so? Biiton When un architect plans a $5,000 house it costs $10,000 but when a man plans to get a $100,000 fortune he usually lands somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,500.? Puck. Gov. Tillman has ordered Sheriffs to levy on railroad property regardless of orders issuing from the United States Court at Charleston. It looks now as if there would he a conflict of jurisdiction and what the outcome will be is not uncertain to foresee. Judge Simonton has al ready issued restraining orders against certain Sheriffs and County Troaurers, forbidding them to interfere with property in the hands of the United States Court. Now, in our humble opinion all this friction could have boon eisMy avoided, it is not so much what is dono by the Soite officers as it is the manner of doing it, that engenders resistance. Some people have a knack of arous ing *11 the devil in a man by their methods of dealing with him.
