flF1 M The Jfofflr jleffa ll Published Every Thursday, E. NORTON, Editor. J. T. MAYERS, Oen'l. Manager. Will the South Eelect HarrisonSt. LouU Republic. As long as Harrison is in the White House, using all the forces of tho Government to keep himself and his Radical faction in control of the couutry, Democrats cannot afford to divide anvwhor?. mwl w?r all in the South, against which Harrison has directed 'all the force of his narrow and bigoted sectional Radicalism. In Tennessee, in Alabama, in Arkansas, in Texas, in other States of the South, there are moil who have boon Democrats until now. Hut they now profess themselves so much better than their party that their superior virtue conipells them to raise the standard of revolt against its nominees and to attempt to disrupt it. \\*n iIn iirtt -1: '1 i i v -v iivv 111 iv IJ IU lllSCUSS 111C question of whether or not these gentlemon are better than the Democratic party in their own States or at large. We may freely concede every claim they make to their own superiority to the rest of us who stand in lino for the party of .1 ici feuson of Jackson, of Ci.evki.an i>, of Duo ley. But when we concede that what are we to do about it further? Does it follow that wo must break our ranks and give up all tho long struggle of years because of their superior virtue? Because tlioy are "better that the party,'' is all that Democrats have suffered for, striven for, longed for. to be given lip in a moment?the supremo moment in which the organized hosts of Democracy face its opponents in a contest which is to bo decisive? If Judge Dlark, Governor Buchanan, Mr. Kolb, Prof. Carnuhan and all the rest of them arc hotter than the Democratic majority, is that majority on that ncount to abandon organization, to break up into a mob and to scnttcr out, following jnck-o'lantorns with new lights across the marshes? If this is logical, then the ruin of the South and of the country is logical, for to day it is the Democratic party that stands between the country and tho ruin to which Radicalism has been forcing it. North and South, in wheat States, in corn States, cotton States, tho Mississippi \ alley, embracing overv agricultural States between the Rockies and the Alleghenies, the Lakes and the Gulf is burdened with an enormous load of debt directly duo to tho prohi..r i." union ui iMiropoun linports in return for the exportable surplus of the Valley. In the Kast the plutocratic policy is forcing a most menacing issue between labor and capi tnl, between mini hood rights and money privilege, and in the South the same plutoratic policy is forcing a race issue as a pretext for Federal control of elections. Granting all that can be claimed in behalf of such gentlemen as Messrs Buchanan^ Clark, lvolb and Camahan; granting that they arc bettor purer, nobler men than any "brass collar Democrat" who will not yield his principles by deserting his party in its supretno emergency, must Democrats, therefore, turn their knives 011 each other's throats at such a time as this? Suppose Mr. Buchanan is the greatest and most virtuous man Tennessee ever produced; suppose Texas never has produced, never can produce, a Democrat who is the peer of Judge Clark in even the least of those higher virtues which put a man so far above his party that it is virtue in him to desert it in its need, must Democrats because of this surrender the country to Plutocracy; must the long op pressed Mouth for this be given over wholly to the tender mercies of such Radicals as Harrison, whose tenderest mercies for the South mean the continued poverty of its people and their embroilment in a race issue the end of which no man can foresee? It is for Southern Democrats to answer those questions. They have grievances against each other which they have long lacked opportunities to] settle. Two years from now they may find opportunities for settling them without surrendering to Harrison. Hut if they divide now it means Harrison; the Harrison Plutocracy; the Harrison Radicalism; the Harrison Mailed Hand; the Harrison Hlock of Five; the Harrison Civil War Sectionalism in nnnfrnl <?f the country. Tho Kopublic does not love (Governor Buchanan tlie loss, or Judge Clark tho less, or Mr- Kolb or Prof. Caruahan the less. But it remembers 187G; what happened then and for 10 y ars before then in the South. Have Southern Democrats forgotten it? Was its lesson wasted on ^them? Will they desort tho Democratic party now because a gentleman here and there has suddenly discovered bimsetf to be so much better than his party that he cannot stand in the same lino with its majority, or touch his virions and gentlemanly shoulders against the shoulders of common "unwashed," "brass collor" Democrats? If it has come to this, then indeed is the Democratic arty in its last ditch. J>ut we do not believe it has come to it?not yet. It iB not the first timo men who wore better than WO J I the Democratic party have tried to set themselves over 'it, ami fulling, have set themselves against it. But the party still lives and wo cannot hclievo that Southern Democrats will bo guilty now of the unnutter* able folly of breaking ranks as it en ters its greratest contest. Wise Wrods. Promises seem to languish, they cannot die. Truth is not cherished where si? is nourished. The breath of prayer comes from the lifo of faith. Flying birds are never taken in a fowler's snare. Every man defines cowardice in his own case as discretion. Nature has sometimes tnndc a fool; hut a coxcomb is always of a man's own makiiur. r? You cannot dream yourself into a character; \ou must luunmcr and forgo yourself one. Wo nil want a little more than we have, and it is for the good of our souls t hat we don't got it. The time in brooding over troubles if properly employed would enable you to surmount them.
