"The true patriotic citizen is the I man who believes that all men are ! brothers, ami the nation more v tin extension of h:s family, to he loved, rebooted, and cared for accordingly. Such a man attends personally to all civil duties with which ho believes 1 ' 1 - V 1 . mmsoii cmrgcu, intrusting nioro within his own control to his inferiors. IIo knows that any blunder in the management of public affair may j intlict disagreeable, expensive, and perhaps, fatal results upon himself i and those he most loves; and in a larger way he realizes that the men and women about him whom he rospocts as his equals; and those whom he pities because they are unable to j look after their own rights under tlie law. mav suffer alike, if a few in* r 7 tolligent citizens chance to neglect this duly. lie never assumes, that what ho neglects to attend to will be made right by his fellow-men to whom he will return the- favor tit some future time. He realizes that in civic affairs "a stitch in timejsaves nine," and that, if not taken in time, rents anil exposures may occur, which cannot bo repaired in time to prevent disgrace and loss. He prefers lo learn from original sources, what have been the stum bling-1 docks of other States and nations, rather than from persons who make eloventh-hour explanations, for selfish or partisan purposes. In politics, the true patriotic citi/.en takes sides and votes with a party; but. lie makes his partisan utUliations through principle, not. prejudice or personal acquaintance, lie realizes that to be led by tho nose is unmanly, even though the leader bo a wiser man than ho and a personal friend besides; and to follow blindly, is to give way to the weakness through which loaders have become tyrants and nations have lost their liberties. In polit ics, his conscientious demissions may compel him to oppose some of his dearest, friends; for there is a good deal beside conscience that makes differences of opinions, and to accept ideas sit second ban 1, no mat ter from whom, is to admit that 0110 is not lit to think for himself, hut to bo a slave, lie may respect men with whom he differs in opinion, hut need not on that account adopt their erroneous ideas. It is the man who does his own thinking that is remembered; he who only follows, has nothing in his character to keep his memory green. Sometimes the true patriotic citizen finds himself obliged to vote with the party which ho has previously, and in whinh lii? associates aro his old political etio mi 08, This is painful for, as a rule, the more thoughtful and earnest the man, the dearer to him are the ties of sympathy and old associates. Hut if he would be true to his trust; duty must he regarded beforo inclination. It needs bravery to make a true pa- j triotic citizen, lie believes with1 tho Father of his Country thotuEter nal vigilance is tho price of liberty;"1 hence no public interest is too small to receive ins attention. Instead of concentrating his attention atul spending this money once in four years to olect tho presidential candidate of his party, ho attends all primaries and never fails to vote at any election. The true patriotic citizen continues to do battle with a brave heart, a ? " , cheerful face, and an honest hope , that the best man may win, even if he loo8os himself. His compensation consists in the sense of duty well done, and tho more lie does the less reward he thinks himself entitled to. AfKUCA-TOIUS. Sanford, S, C. July 18th, I8W2. Too Late. A broKcti hearted wifo lay dying and her husband remorsefully whispered, :I love you?I have everi lovod you!" She looked at hint a moment and simply answered, "You i are too lato" and died. Are there none of us who are waiting until our friends die ^before wo apeak the words of love and appreciation for which the living hearts are yearning? How is it, husbands? Arc there none of who truly love your wives, and who if they were to die to-day, would feel that words were too poor to portray either their worth or your unguis!), and outway expression to that lovel. None of you who rejoice in your well ordered houses, your well spread tables, your comfortable homes, and yet have never a word of praise for tno busy hand or the governing brain that keeps ' all the complicated machinery of the H M household in motion? Do none of you receive all this as a matter of course, never tbiukin^ that it is churlish and niggardly to give no praise whuro praise is due? And are there no wives who forget that love, like jealously, grows by what it feeus on, and that it is far easier to win a heart than it is to keep it? That to keep the heart they have won is the first, the sweetest duty of the true j wife? None who have laid aside all the pretty witcheries of their ohihl hood days?and who, though their love is still strong and true, nave forgotten how to he tender? I k now some of you whose hearts are warm and loyal, and who, if your husbands I were lying dead boforo you would doubtless feel that the light of lives ; had gone out; ami yd your man nor is so cold, so indifferent, that a stranger would bo justified in woiKlering whether vour love was not hound hand and foot in the cerements of the grave. There are fathers and mothers among you who really love your children tenderly, but yet who are so irresponsive, so little given to expression that your hoys and girls are in doubt about it. You notice the crudities, the weaknesses, the seem ing waywardness that is often only the unrest of immaturity; out you fail to recognize the upward yearn-! , ings, the aspiration, the blind outreaching of the young soul after something higher and bct'er than itself. It is only they are dead that your children became to you al together lovely. Would it not bo well if we were to allow life to wear somewhat of the glamour and illusion I which now seem to bo the monopoly ; of death? Would it not bo well if we wore to teach our lips to utter now the love and praise and gratitude which, if we do not, we shall certainly sometime, in anguish of spirit, pour into the deaf ears of those whoso sealed lips can make us i no response? We are so reticcent, so self contained. Why is it? Is it pride, or' is it shyness that, makes us so silent?; Many of us i.ro so afraid of being considered "flatterers'" I hat we will I not say pleasant things to each other even when occasion demands it. And 1 some of us lack th* proper training1 Our lips are dumb because they have never been taught to speak. II is so much easier to speak I out sharply than to sppeak I sweetly. Kven in our own house holds we are afraid of being accotin! td, "silly" if wo dare to give a ca j ress or a tender, loving word to bus band and children, fater and mother brother or sister! Hut by and by upon their unanswering lips deaf j ears we shall pour agonized prayers j for forgiveness, tomb-rest words of] love, and buck upon our own rcgrot ful, romorseless hearts will recoil the sting." "Whilo they are with you, love those the gods lend. While they need it, give them of your heart's best.' Item ember That Johnson's Chill and Fever funic will euro chill and fever, hi I lions fever, malarial fever, Swamp i and Hemorrhagic fever, also newralgia ami Ladripp, and if it fails to do so your money will he returned.
