The less a man knows the more he finds fault with othor people. The time when peoplo need religion the most is when they can't have ^ their own way about things. Among the many localities in South Carolina needing banks, Conwa^should not be overlooked. ^ Don't forget the picnic at the Muster Shed on Saturday, 4th of i July. Everyone expected to bring ? a full basket. George A. Croft and friends are f endeavoring to interest parties iti the v establishment of a bank in Conway, v A Mr. Day advertises for his lost dog. lie should certainly recover it. f If every dog has his day, then every > Day ought to have his dog. The fault with too many advertis- c ers is that they talk prose and price e lists when they have a precious opportunity of saying something pleasant. Judicious advertising pays. Mr.E.G.Burroughs is reputed to be 'j a pretty hard driver and yet the first j horse ho ever lost died last Monday y from accidentally overeating and j then drinking water and being driv- ? en. We arc contemplating a plan by \ which cash subscribers to the Horiiy j IIkuald will get the paper twelve v months for nothing. The proposi- i tion sounds paradoxical, but the plan u is possible. s The Herald received its first 1 Q watermelon last Tuesday. It was presented by that public spirited young man, Nicholas F. Nixon, of . Little River, who ssys he has been delcctating in the luscious fruit since the 20th inst. That was .1 beautiful, refreshing t rain last -Monday night and was very rj g*y.ivtul to the thirsty soil. Corn f was needing rain badly, so were also ( gardens. Crops are generally look- a ing well and the prospect for a re- f munerativo yield is very good. ? Rev. W. A. Wright is conducting $ a very interesting meeting at J)u- 1 rant's church. A profound religious impression prevails in the commu- a nity. There have been to date ten 1 conversions and seven accessions. v A 1 1 n I* OV/Xtlfilo/l nl ^ iiuai */n.n>uiu ui/ every wi'ViuUi I Amos Green, colored, died very c suddenly lust Monday. lie was fire- ? man on the Steamer liutli, Captain j Williams, and made fire in the furnace and was seen pushing it up e about 7 o'clock and before 3 p. m. a was dead, lie was carried home about 1 o'clock p. m. He was a fl strong vigorous hand on the Ituth v and his place cannot be easily filled. ? A recent visit to the Cedar Grove 1 section of our county and an inspeo- 1 tion of some of the crops demon- 1 strates the fact to us that there is ^ some fine farming land in that section. 1 We saw a portion of the crops of the c the following gentlemen : Me?srs. > W. At Spivcy, George Hodges, C. \I. Hodges, Goodman James and others, and we pronounce them fine and in c good order. The people of this sec- t tion arc sadly in need of the proper g mail facilities to insure the safe de- ^ livery of their mail matter. * e The 3rd Quarterly Conference for y Conway Station was held last Friday, <, night Kev.T.J. Clyde, P .E. presiding, j All the interests of the church were ( faithfully ounvassed and the reports c indicated no special progress in any j department?two members had been e received by profession since last y quarterly report. The presiding elder ^ preached again Sunday night from 0 John vi, 51, comparing and contrusting the manna in tho Wilderness ^ with the bread given by Jesus Christ, j He run a very nice parallel between ^ the two, showing that physical life 8 in (fne case depended upon the man- j na and in the other all spiritual life a depended upon Jesus Christ. \ f M. J. Thackston has made his de- j fonsc before the public for the circu k lar to County School commissioners t recently published, but does not r touch the gravamen of the charge. ? He alleged in his circular that a res- f olution had been passed by the State , Board of Examiners authorizing s Trustees to subscribe to the Palmet- v to School Journal and draw on the County Treasurer for payment. This j has been proven to be erroneous, yet d Thackston simply says that he d bought it was passed. A muu of uch short aud treacherous memory an hardly be a safe guide iu educalonal matters aud any other man ban an ardent supporter of the Aduinistration would be unceremoliously bounced. Removals bavo teen made for more insignificant casons than this. James Anderson died yesterday norning. He has been paralyzed oine time and was attacked with dysntery. Personal. The fanners too, who ?ave for some time, been feeing a little despondent on account of he dry weather are now wearing a mile, (also a badge with the motto 'Hope and Adversity" pinned on heir hats, similar to those worn by Fillmanites last fall,) since the rereshing shower Sunday morning, hops are looking line in this section, ,iul every thing promises a bountiiil harvest. Mr. A, B. Staley who has been teaching school or some tirtie in the Cool Spring leighborhood, is on the seashore visting friends and relatives and enjoyng the cool breeze of the old Atlauic?he expects to return soon and esume his position. Mr. Boyd Jones tf Cool Springs, came with h'in i BEACH PAKTY TURNED INTO A SEARCH PARTY. Friday morning everybody was up arly and hurrying off for a day on he beach. The crowd began to [ather about 9 o'clock, at the place mown as the "IlurlI Hocks" and by 0 o'clock quite a crowd had gatherd, and the amusements of the day vcre just begun, when the cry of 'Lost," was heard, and soon was re>orted through the whole assembly. )f course, the distressing news ihanged the merry, laughing faces nto very sad ones when it was learnd that it was a child about five rears of age was lost. A search vas immediately instituted but with?ut success. Its mother. Mrs. J. M. Stalvey, was present and it seemed hat it was more than she could bear. U1 efforts to console her were made, mt to no effect. Mr. Stalvcy was ent for and when he arrived, the >arty took some refreshment and the earch was renewed, and this time nth better success, as the child was ound about seven or eight miles beow where we were, near the "Ark." Ihe was brought back and restored o the btreaved parents. All was nirth after that and the remainder if the day was very pleasantly spent tathing, &c. Cupid as is generally he case, at such times and places iresided, and as the young folks trolled along the strand whispering yords of love, the old folks sat in he cool hammock and talked of arming, raising chickens and other lomestic affairs. All returned about Insk after spending a very exciting lay. Omega. I \ For Tiik IIkkald. Conway, S. C., July 1st, 1801. Mn. Editor : I note with great pleasure the many improvements going on in Conway and the many enterprises contemplated, but it strikes me that none would pay so well or be the cause of attracting outside capital more so, than a Hank. It is the most important. It would be a grand move to start a bank of say $50,000 capital?at onco?*25, $12.50 cash ; $25, *12.50 in four months; $25, *12. 50 in eight months, and $25, $12.50 in twelve months. The stock can be easily placed in and near Conway, and if two or three of your live business men would start the move, I am satisfied that the stock can be placed quicker than you ciin imagine. With a bank we can facilitate business with promptness which we have heretofore been deprived of, and could handle much business which in the past has gone to other towns because we had no banking facilities to handle the business. Who will bo the man to start a subscription list. Suii8ciuni?R. | Loris Locals. Crops are tine especially corn. Watermelons very promising and apples in abundance. Farmers are well up with their work and are laying-by as fast as possible. The health of the community is good. Merchants arc doing a thriving business, getting all the turpentine they can manage. E. Crops are not so good as we could wish for, but the farmers are redoubling their energies to make them better by keeping down the grass. They expect to realize an average crop, at least, with seasons. The Sunday school at Antioch is rep o r t e d, in a prosperous condition under the superintendcncoy of Mr. I). II. Jordan. The students deserve much credit for their fair record. We have visited many I schools, but we know of none where j the students deserve more credit for ] their efforts than those of Antioch.1 The school is not supplied with the proper instruction, but the students are excelled by none in their thorough preparation of lessons and punctuality in attendance, being placed under such peculiarly unfavorable circumstances. Alas! when will the penniless boys learn that there is something else necessary for the completion of a happy home, than a wife ? On last Sunday, June the 21st, Mr. Woodward Allen and Miss llosa Graham were united in the holy bonds of matrimony, at the residence of Mr. S. B. Moore. We wish for them more happiness than we can predict. Mr. Moore performed the ceremony and we are informed that he works very cheap, thereby I. If II I ---Ml i cnaoung an who win, 10 come ana receive this much coveted bleBsing. Yet, because this is a blesssing in which the writer is not privileged to indulge, and because Mr. Moore works cheap we do not think a boy should spend his first quarter in this way. We arc glad to note the return of our old friend and school mate, W. II. Johnson, who has been attending school at the Graham Male and Female Collegiate Institute. Ho expects to engage in his favorite profession?teaching. IIo has taught in different parts of this county and has gained an enviable reputation as a tutor. Pueblo, Colo., June 21.?The village of Kades, in Kiowa, County, has a Constable at that station. Last night the Missouri express was detained three hours by this modem Dogberry. A citizen of lSades garnished the salary of an oinployee of the road and got judgement for $17. 50 and costs. Tho company neglected to settle and the matter wu? given to the constable. After a short stop at Eades last night the conductor signalled the engineer to pull out. The engineer was, however, awed by the law's representative, who had the requisite papers and had attached the engine. He was inexorable. The conductor spent two hours telegraphing the superintendent, Snally obtaining instructions to pay the fearless Constable, who meantime occupied the cab< A Postal lnspec [tor was on the delayed turti, and it is said suit will by brought against the Constable for intercepting the United States mails.
