In the State of Virginia and in that part which is associated in history with the story of Captain John Smith and Pocahontas, there is a school known as "Hampton." Here there tire one hundred ami forty Indians studying hooks, learning trades and in their hours of /('creation | playing ball- There are four clubs now among these Indian school-hoys. The best cltih boasts the name of "Hampton Indian Nine" or "'First I Nine," while the noorosf cluh mod-' 1 " .. 1 estly calls itself "Fourth Nine. ]hiring the Easter vacation the \ ale Glee Club stopped at the Hampton School. The singing was very much enjoyed, but the presence of Mr. A. A. ktagg, the famous amateur baseball man, roused the interest and enthusiasm of all the ball players. A desire was at once aroused to make his acquaintance. Those boys who; had the pleasure of a hearty handshake and a few words with him now feel like old friends of Mr. Stagg. j The words that gave a special delight to all the boys who heard them was the olTer to give a few points on pitching, lie then accompanied tinIndian pitcher to the practice grounds. Here Mr. Stagg explained and put into practice the theory of his deceptive curves, lleeaught for bis pupil and explained the cause of j each failure and encouraged each . success. This practice gave t he club what it needed and aroused an interest that will last for some time. The "Hampton Indian Nine' has been organized for about two years. Gaines have been played with a club of white men from a neighboring O c town. In this club there are four men who have played with professional clubs while the Indians are new players. The best game if hoy have won was from this club of white men by a score of f> to G. The greatest success they have gained is the friends they have mad bye ! quiet gentlemanly conduct on the field. This has been so marked that ' newspapers publishing reports of their games have made special mention of it. Their uniform consists of a white flannel cap with a red band around it, blue shirt with the letters "II. 1. X." in white upon the! breast, blue pants and dark red stockings. Another success in their base running. This is not done to perfection, but when any are on the bases they do some good running. The next Indian club at this school is known ss "Ten Little Indians." They piny a very good game. They have won all the games they have < played. They hare more time to practice than the olaer boys and so i are able to play a good game. They < have beaten clubs of white hoys who have played them, and -?lso one club 1 of colored boys. At the Educational Home in I'hil- 1 adelphia there is a club of Indian I boys. They have during the past ] season })layed with neighboring 1 white boys. They have also visited < some of the towns in New .Jersey and t played. They have to their credit a ? large percentage of their games play- i ed. ' 1 < At ihe (ioverninent Indian school 1 at Genor, Nebraska, there is a very ( goo<l Indian base-bull club. To find < ball playing at school may be natur- f S. al enough, but it extends further, it , At the Sesneton Agency in Dakota* 4 here is a line ball elub of Imliair ] :>o\>. On the Oneida Reservation in Wisconsin there are throe Indian 1 nn*e-ball clubs. ! Among the Sioux Indians at Low- h ?r ltrule Agency in Dakota they I play ball. On the Fourth of .Inly < last year the special feature of the I lay was a game of base ball. The i elebration of a great national holi- i lay, by Indians, with the great na- i tional game, is something rather novel. All the players in this game < were Indians, and the Indian spcctators were as entluisiastie as those who wateh the New games. There is no doubt, however, that the ;'.\elamat ions sounded" different. There were also many little differen- : i 1...I l - i - ' i ^ i i hi i. M i >u n i i iii \ *. Miuuh ;i .Min-lafor who lias watched l?all playing unong whitepeople. Some of these were to their credit. All umpire's decision was not <|iioationcd and the playing was <|uiot and orderly. 1 It has heen the custom at. some of : most of the Western Indian agencies 11 to spend the day in dancing and feasting. This is a relic of their! old and uncivilized life. The day! which is emblematic of the birth of m this nation is better celebrated by i the games and pleasures of civilized |t people. The feasting and dancing) is a tie of the olden time and carries ! all who take part in it backward, i It means a domination of old nonprogressive men, superstition, idle-:' ucssau'd ignorance. The celebration 1 at Lower Brule means improvement, education, progress, young men. Base-ball playing among Indians is significant of more than a cluiugc in game, yon see. * It marks civilization The result is that the young people by their work, play and living are carrying their race toward a new life instead of ! mo "lumen ooiiiiiitimg on as do-j fore. The agents al many or all of the Agencies should when possible ar range to have the festivities to he. t forward along this line. It wouldi' he more to their credit and for thd| Indians and our country than w , have an Indian dance to satisfy tfe curiosity of a few white people. 77to,t.
