The first important thing Was the a«t couveution of the General Synod, when and where. It was de flted by ballot that the uext nreet- «g shall be the last Thursday iu April, 1874, in the Lutheran church « Savannah, Ga. I, The sobject of paying the salary j * «1 Professor of Theology for the I '***' ,,r ,,a<l that ishiug Lutheran ediigregattune, ami wtiere w« now perhaps meet with uoi a tingle mihvulual bearing the name or the immortal Reformer. Now what is the canse of tbi* state of affairs f Hi* important for ns as Lutherans to in«|tdre. There may have existed many cause# which have contributed to bring about this condition of things; but 1 think two causes stand prominent among all others. The first i* the vague «ud indefinite doctrinal position of the ministers who were the organizers of these congregations. I was told some time since by an old man that many years ago one of theac would tie Lutheran ministers, ami a minister of the I'nited Brethren Church, held a protracted meeting Jointly in a«wr tain isirtion of Rockingham county, in which meeting a number of Indi vidua Is professed faith iu Cbriat. At the close of the Hire ling the laith erau minister told the congregation that nil who wished to unite with 'ti»e Lutheran Church would have at. opportunity to do so at a certain time. The other minister thru made a similar statement in behalf of bin Church, adding that it any desired to see the doctrinal position of hi* Church ami their discipline, they could do mi by apprising him of the fact. The Lutheran again arose and remarked that, “the Lutheran Chimb did uot have much dnwiplme, bot that what abe did have, might U found in the back part of our b>u»n book, and that a* to her doctrinal position it was baaed (or partly **>) n|s>n the Augsburg Confession, but that he did not have a copy of it. and could not tell them where one could lie found.” The nidi. itlnsl also told me that in conversing with this same minister be had told him that the Augsburg Confession wa» regareietl as the creed of the Loth eran Church, but that in this «mii» pul a leather t» b«* «H» t . wdarsteeisl aMae.
