Philadelphia— Meeting of Church
Council*.—The several oonurils of
the German Lutheran churchtw in
Philadelphia, have elected delegates
of late to hold frequent general
meetings for the promotion of the
welfare of the German Lutheran
Church. An effort is making to
equalise the Axed contributions of
the members in different churches.
In case of removal Km one pariah
to another, a certificate will be given
mentioning up to what date the
member has paid his oontrilmtion,
and this certificate will cutUle the
holder to exemption from charch
does in his new connection until the
time mentioned. A resolution was
passed, requesting Synod to exemse
one of the German pastors from
attendance at each annual session of
Synod, so that he may remain in
Philadelphia and minister to all the
people in the absenee of their other
pastors.—Lutheran and Hivdonary.
Missouri Sfnod.—The twenty fifth
convention has closed, after a session
of ten days. The Synod, at ita or
gunization in 1M47, had but 12 miu
isters; now it has 14.10, laboring in
2C States of the Uniou, and 230
teachers. Syuod has 0 literary and
theological institutions, and about
400 studeuts, all of whom are pre
paring either for the pulpit or the
school room. The Scmiuary at St
lamia has 1.10 theological students
and fl professors. About 30 students
attend lectures and hold dixcuasiou*
in Latin. The gospel was preached
on Sunday, May 25th, in four differ
cut languages: German, Norwegian,
i>utch aud English. The uniou be
tween the Missouri and Ohio Synods
was completed. X committee of
conference with the Minnesota Syuod
was appointed. The Missouri Synod
has Also censed to exist as such ; it
is hereafter to be a District Synod,
to be represented by delegates iu the
Geucral Synodical Conference.
The sessions were held iu Liberty
Hall, which will seat 2,200 |*ersons.
There were generally from 1,300 to
2,000 persons present. The St. Louis
Democrat declares that “it was by
far the largest assembly of ecclssias
tk-al dignitaries and lay delegates
of this church that has ever utet iu
this country, n and Rev. H. K. Urohst
says “it was unquestionably the
largest German, uay, the largest
Lutheran Synod ever held iu Amer
ica." -
