Yea, the Lord has budded this memorial into our midst onto himself in me^onm dei #4e- Thia house of God beam hence forth, by virtue of its oonsacration, the name, “The German Evangelical Lutheran St. Matthew's Church.® Why called German f What has the Gospel to do with any distinct tongue f Did not the Lord Jeens Christ send his disciples to all na tions and to all tongues f Dose uot St. Paul say there is neither Jew nor Greek f We nevertheless hold feat to this name and onr because we are and will Germans; because we can not sur render the rich treasures of onr lan guage, mod of our German intellect, without proving recreant to our selves ; because wa can also teach it to our children if we are disposed; because the German has a grand future before him in this country) because the only hope of the regen eration of this country rests is the German element; and because only the German tongue upholds the Ger man. We will never forget that during the bnilding of our church, the high est elevation ( which- the nation of Teutons has reached has been in scribed on the paces of the history of the world. A united Germany unites us; Germany's strength and greatness aroused our self cousetoos ness. Those were strong auxiliaries in our work, and we will grateftilly render our obligations to there fac tors, and the enthusiasm of our )>eople in the father laud shall be our monitor not to forget the work appointed us Germans to do. But why called “Evangelical F Evan gelical ts the golden, brightly shin ing chairoof grace, which the Lord in the sight of the whole world hangs around our Church. Who that is but half a Christian would uot willingly be called Evangelical f And what is Evangelical T It is the church with the Evangel—that is, the Gospel, with the grand tidings of joy to the world: “For Gqd so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Where the word of God “is preached ac cording to its pure intent and mean ing, and the sacraments adminia tered in oonformity with the word of God," there is the true Evangeli cal chnrch. This is the real and original name of the Chnrch of the Reformation. And yet two names of men have been affixed to our Church—Lather and Matthew. As regards the name of “Lutheran,® we bear it in common with 40,000,000 of men; and al though it almost is similar to that of “Xazareoe*® in the infancy of the Christian Church, we yet rajoiet and esteem it nearly as highly si the name ot “Evangelical.® See, here, my beloved, at the thne of the Ref ormation and since, all who left Rome wanted to be called Eraugeli- cal. As regards bis frith, La ther is the normal personality In onr Church—the type of a genuine Lu- theran—and if it is asked why we love this name so mock, I gladly* testify of the superior excellency of oor Church.
