1. I am opposed to ilram drinkiug,
lMHjaustt.it is the prolific tourtm of all
drunkenness, and of uU the untold
evils thereof.
If there were no dram-drinking,
there would lie no druukarde, no
broken-hearted wives ami beggared
children, no waste of property and
money, no woes and sorrows, no kin
dling of the diabolical passions into
a flams, no quamdiufc, and fighting,
and law suits, and ebureh discipline,
nnd i>arental solicitude—uo rain of
ImhIv and soul to all eternity, sutail
ed by drinking.
How sipall the fountain, how large
the stream! I have seen the head
spriug ol the Oatnwba, wliere yon
could turn it with your foot, but

its mouth. How dettg* and broad
is the dark stream of dram drinking,
wliere it pours over into the ocean
of Eternity l How wide spread aud
desolating to parent*, wives and

2. It is wholly unnecessary.
This cuts off all excuse. Millions
never use it, never thiuk of it, have
no ihhhI of it, whether it is cold or
hot, wet of dry, at koipc, or on the
road. Have any been injured by
not using it V Does a healthy man
need it I “No more,” says an em
inent physician, ‘‘than he needs poi
son.” What more does lie need if he
is healthy. Does it not argue the
love of it! Do we flrink it to do us
good, or because it is good ! Med
ical societies abundantly declare that
“all use of it as a beverage is an
abusethat iusteod of being nec
essary, it is “mischievous under all
circumstances.” If it is, then, the
source of so much evil, aud yet
wholly unnecessary—why use it, and
give it to our children T How small
the self-denial, how great the peril.
3. I urn opposed to dram drinking,
because;it is insidious aud deceit
ful.
Did any of the 30,000 a year who
fill a drunkard's grave suspicion their
danger! Will any of tlic 100,000
tipplers, going with railroad speed
to ruin, aekuowUslge they drink too
much ! The man who beat hit wife’s
brains out with a stick of wood In;
cause she told him he was drinking
too much, is oue example among
thousands. A mail ouce held up a
bottle and said, “You killed my fatb
er, you killed my grand father aud
my three brothers, aud I will kill a*
much of you as ) can,” and drank it
off and killed himself. Did he kill it,
or did it kill him,I

is deceived thereby is not wise." A

would dare to way he drauk too

do traders and jockeys and salesmen

4. I am opposed to draui drinking,
because it is injurhn* in its nature.
Forty-five physicians in one place,
ami seventy five in another, declare
it poisonous to the system. Physiol
ogists, chemists qinl physicians, who
know its action ou the system, de
elure it to be a ppison. It ia wholly
indigestible, and consequently with
out a particle of nourishment. It
stimulates aud dxcites, but does not
incor]>oratc so as to pnMliioe nourish
ment.
I^is alcohol in the stomach, alco
hol in the IiW^mI, alcohol in the brain,
alcohol .still undigested. It has lieeu
distilled from the brain, and bad the
smell of whjhjfkey, and would burn
“with a lambent blue flame.” Beware
of the iHiison. And who does not know
tliat in tliis evil day, it is actually
poisoned with stry chnine, and a vari
ety of other poisououa drugs ? Mil
lions of gallons and barrels are di
luted and )M)i(w>ned with various sub
stances.

any redeeming quality, except as a
