When this was ascertained, FATHER IIKYKR, a man of 78 years of age, then my jooniiag in Denmark, immediately proposed to undertake the mission to reclaim it, if his Synod (the Pennsyl vania Xinistcrinuit would undertake to defray the expenses. Ho r rejoiced that ven terabie old missionary must haw ' been! Here he was again among the people whom be brought to Christ many years ago (to whom Iieveread Fnangst now ministers). Xialit#rial Rapport. This is an important subject, much more important than is generally supposed. It is an index, not only of the lo\ * and good will we bear to our Pustor, but an infill ble rule by which we are to judge of the religions tone ot the membership of the church of God. Bhow aw a charch which compline with this rule, aud I will show yon a membership Who are instant in season and out of season, in every good word and work. Not that good works see marl tori suit, that is, so far as our salvation is «a X ed, twit they are the fruit of a l tree. No hum will be saved on account of, or fur, hia good works, but not one will ever be saved with out them. The church is aa much bound to support its pastor aa its member* are to pay their honest debts. It is not ouly obligator) on them to do this, but to place him beyond the reach of want, so that the cores and sax ieties of life will not disturb his thoughts when preparing for his pul[>it exercises. There is not that man on eurtb, I care not how foil) und spiritual be inay be, who can go into his closet, or study, aud pre|nut> himself for his Sabbath exercises, when pressed down by the cares and anxieties of this life. It is not in ha man nature, nor is it iu hninnu nature seasoned by all the grace which the Bible enjoins. Preach to a people who do not love him, or who do not manifest that high regard by a gen erous support t It ia out of the ijue* tion. God never inteudisl that it should be so; and hence, be says that they who preach the gos]s-l shall live of tlie gospel, aud a thousand other correlative texts. But common sense, spart from Revelation, inculcates the same doc trine. It is in vain to expect a paator to do' his duty on the .Sabbath, in the pulpit, when he has to spend six days oat of seven between tin plow ban dies, or in an old-field school-house, or even anywhere else than in his library, J.iml on bis knees. It is as much impossible as it ia to make water run up hill. There is a feature in ministerial support which prevails extensively iu tlie north, and which has never been introduced in the south, so far as I know, aud which, with ail the faults of that peofde, is praisewortby aud ought to be introdmasl here.
