A great, bar of steel, weighing live hundred pounds and eight feet in length, was .suspended vertically by a very delicate chain. Near at band wu? also suspended a common bottle cork by rt silk thread. The pur pose was te show that the cork could set tho steel bar in motion. It scorned impossible. The cork w as swung gently against the steel bar and tho steel bar remained mo tionless. But it was done again and again for ten minutes, and lo! at thc end of that time the bar gave evidence of feeling uncomfortable; a sort of a nervous chill ran over if TVn minnb . With thc continued prosperity that is now blessing ibis State there is every indication I hat thc State Fair for 1905 will lc more largely attended than ever bc?ore in ils his tory. Last year the South Carolina State Agricultural and Mechanical Society celebrated its annual Fair at its new home in the southern su burb of Columbia. As is usually the case, lhere were some little de tails that could not be finished for thc holding of thc last Fair, but President C.uignard bas bad a full year in which to have all of these lough spols smoothed out, and the outlook is that never before in its history will thc State bair have a more suceeesful Fair than that which is to be held here on October 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th, inclusive. Thc inquiry for space at thc grounds, as well as from small ex hibitors, indicate a very general ap ?neeiation of thc value of such cx libits. A great deal of interest is being shown in thc mechanical de vices for usc in agricultural pur suits. From thc inquiries that have been received there will be quite a nt?'tiber of labor-saving devices ex hibited, and, of course, all up-to date fariucrs want to see these things. There is, however, a far more in teresting phase of the State Fairs than thc mere exhibits in thc build ings on thc ground, and that is the opportunity for intercourse between the people of thc State that thc State Fair ?fters. In fact, pretty much everybody who is any body iu South Carolina is here dur ing Fair Week. Relatives, friends {end acquaintances from ai! paru of the State gather in Columbia to talk alxmt the joy* and sorrows' Q? the year, and to join in thc festivi ties. It is the one week that is given up almost entirely by the people of the State towards having a good time, and the family gatherings and reunions that have already been planned for the coming Fair Week all go to show that this custom at each succeeding Slate Fair is being more emphasized than ever. One of the particular attractions for a great many folks will be the fact that the 650 cadets of Clemson College will bc encamped herc dur ing tile entire Fair Week. They will give dress parades and drills each day while here, and will have ample time in which to mingle with their friends. A great many people in this State now arc taking a keen interest in football. Two of thc best gaines of the year are played here during each Fair Week. In OIK* of these gaines the team of the South Caro lina College participates, and in the other Clemson College engages. Both of these teams are strong and manly, and two exciting games arc to be expected. The southern territory is devel oping a very strong horseracing field. More and better horses arc brought here to participate in thc races. The finest racetrack in this territory is at the State Fair Grounds, and it bas been estab lished at a considerable expense livery comfort for thc patrons ns well as for thc fine racers has been provided. The city of Columbia, in addition to extending a cordial welcome to thc visitors, has arranged for free street attractions.
