In tompornl matters elie can never succeed satis factorily until she subordinates every interest to the spiritual. Success in money getting may be disastrous to thc church, ovcry thing depends on thc method em ployed. Once men and women realize that overy thing seen, tasted, heard said or done, becomes educative, that a church which resorts to fes tivals, etc, for tho support of its institutions is educating thc people to give from a wrong mo tive; that a few years of such train ing will drop it below thc level of sdjipoi'l given olhor and ic;-. . worthy objcvi.,. Such tim u. aro tho uouu>iou when I hi' festival i. thought of and resorted to as thc only means of relief. The mistake is made in adop ting such a method al that time. God may have brought tho church to a financial .strait as he docs individuals, to lest tho quality of its faith and integrity. In such a moment let the church go down before God in humble faith and prayer; and then out of its deep poverty, with joy give. Ile will order things his own way, will raise up friends and in crease contributions until there shall bo money and to sparc. Thc Lord never intended his church should bo dragged through all sorts of doubtful methods in order to be supported. "As God has prosper ed" is the law. It is not sinful to eat oysters or chicken pic; but it is wrong to educate a community to support the gospel by receiving in return quid pro quo. Thc gospel contains within itself-and men must beso educated-what is in I finitely more valuable than things that perish." The foregoing deals directly with some church doings in our com munity, and is a slap in the face to all such. Dinnors, Cantatas, Festivals, Moot Courts, etc., have no sanction in God's word for raising money for his cause.
