Tho Inst des perate move of tho panic-stricken Republicans is to restore hides to tho free list, repeal all the duties on sugar and givo the sugar pro ducers a bounty of two cents a pound. A careful computation by the Democrats of the committee shows t?mt even with the sugar du ties thrown overboard the McKin ley Bill would increase the revenue moro than four million dollars on the basis of present importations. The farmers who raise corn and pork and can't sell them, aro to bo taxed S7,500,000 a year to support the sugar planters, suppose thero is no increase in production, and an additional sum to enable the Gov ernment to pay seven cents a pound for cocoons and $1 a pound for raw Bilk. The bounty system is thc protec tion system with the meath taken off. Governor Warmouth, of New Orleans, a great sugar planter, told tho ways and means committee that the bounty system would not. ?uit the planters at all because the people wouldn't stand it; the boun ty would not last two years ; as soon as tho pcoplo discovered that tim protection system was merely a disguised bounty system they would wipe out the wiiolo thing. Governor Warmouth is a very clever-headed man.-Na t i o n a I Democrat. Constable Bennett, armed with a warrant authorizing him to attach a trunk of a nogro woman for bedt, made a horrible discovery on the 1st inst, at Augusta, Ga. While waiting at tho depot for the arrival of tho woman's trunk a baggage wagon deposited it on the platform. The officer seized it and opened it to investigate its contents. As he did so he was astounded to find the body of a woman packed close ly in the. box. It was that of thc woman whom the warrant was is snod against. She died the night before /md was being shipped off to relatives in a trunk, as she was so pier that her friends could not buy a coffin for her. A novel operation has been per formed in the Edinburg Royal in firmary. A farmer was suffering from a diseased leg bone, induced by an accident. On medical advice became to the infirmary and was put under the care of Mr. Miller, surgeon, wdio determined to remove thc diseased portion and substitute tin ox rib. The operation was performed a month ago, and it seems it has been so successful that the man will be about again short ly with a limb as strong and healthy as ever.-Ball-Mall Ga zette. A new method of testing woolen garments is by putting caustic soda into a cup of water and thc article whose genuineness is doubted into the mixture, of course being ca tofu 1 not to touch the liquid. The caustic soda will qiiickly oat animal fibers, hut has no efl cot upon (hose of vegetable or igin. If tho article is all wool it will he dissolved in the liquid, leaving nothing but a track of colored matter. If thc material is cotton, it conies out unscathed When tlc material is wool supported hy a framework of cot toil, the latter being indistinguish able to tho oyo or hy ordinary tests, tho c;iu-<tio soda quickly divorces the . two, dissolves the wool and leaves tho colton ns clean as if it had been woven by itself. It has been suggested that people might buy a sd of underwear mada of wool and cot len mixed, that when the sultry days of spring arrive a hath of caustic soda might ho pro pared, tho garments dipped therein, to om urge in tho form of cotton gos- | sanier for tho summer (?oason,-I lall H , Journal of Health.
