How TO H AVK GOOD ??UTTKK. Farmers and dairymen aro not ontiroly responsible, for all the bad buttor to be found In our markets. Much that would otherwise have reached tho con sumer m fair condition ls ruined In tho grocers' hands by hoing stored In badly ventilated cellars and other places, with decayed vegetables, kerosono, &c. Tho indiscriminating taste of tho general public is also a groat hindrance to Im provement In tho manufacturo of but ter. Some few there are who must bavo really good buttor, and aro willing, if need be, to pay a high pr leo for lt; but it has beou raro for an ordinary farmer to meet wthi such customers as th eso. Tho general run of tho publie do not know high class from inferior buttor, UUIOBS the butter is vt ry bad. Tho story is* well kuown of tho clover grocer who, when ho got a firkin Of butler, used to saw it in half and labol ono half twenty cents and tho other twenty-live cents; customers tasted and looked knowing, and, generally came to tho conclusion that for tho Bake of tlvo cents they had better take Hiebest; and livo firkins went off at twenty-five cents a pound for ovory ono that was sold at twenty couts. Tho fact is, there has been such a quantity of inferior butter forced on tho markot that peoplo havo gut used to it. The most that can be said is t hal some is less bad than others. Few know tho deheato aroma and nutty davor or tho bo3t sweet cream butter. The great majority of. consumers are content if they got butter devoid of strong tasto or smell, boneo tho opening for butlerino, which is free from bad odor and has no unpleasant tasto, or rather very littlo tasto of any kind. Hut tho remedy lies largely in tho band? of Ibo butter producer. In tho first placo ovory elTort should bo made to manufacturo a good article, and mar kot it in an attractive shape. ?Second ly, those who can and do make good buttor Bhould Beek a market whore such products are appreciated. If tho local doalor pays ono price for all but tor, regardless of quality, tho butler maker should transfer his business to somo dealer more nearly abreast with the timos. Tho ,4ono price" dealer will thus only get tho Inferior article, and ho will soon chango Ilia policy. When the practice of paying for buttor ac cording to quality becomes general, but little bad buttor will bo produced. Cows AND SH UKI,'.-Try to keep tho milch cows up to tho amount of milk given last month, if it is possible. Kven though tho grain may for a while cost more .than it Would to accept a smaller amount of milk for a time, yet it is well lo remember the danger of establishing a bad precedent, and If tho cows shrink in milk now they will not bo likely to incroaso their product again until spring. Do not allow them to run lu mowing lands, or oven in pas tures, excepting for a fow hours' exor cise in pleasant weather, and then seo that they havo been well fod upon be ing turned out, as all they may eat of tho frost-bitten grass or weeds is an Injury to thom greater in value than the cost of the food 'given at tho barn would be. Go through the Hock of sheep once more, and seo if there are not others that should bo culled out and made mutton of. This month usually tests thom as sevoroly as any of the fall months, and thoso that go through November in good condition ought to winter well. X i H ii" i t ;i nt. When yon visa or cav? Tine objection td tho ives Seedling grape is that it takes tho proper color before it is ripe and is marketed in tho green state. Willie this permits some to market grapes early, yet tho decep tion practiced on purchasers, many of whom buy such grapes supposing them to bo ripe, when in fact thoy aro green and bitter, causes distrust, and really low'crs tho prices of good grapes when thoy reach tho market. Tho growers of tho best grapes are in favor of sup pressing tho Ives Seedling if lt can bo done. 1 THK raising of turnip and cabbage seed has proved very profitable, and addod materially to tho income of tho rarmors on tho cast end of Long Island, Ono farmer near Mattltuck is said to luwo cleared $1200 from cabbago seed alone. Another mado ?120 from tur nip seed raised on a small plot. Tho main crops in that section aro cauli llowors, cabbagos and potatoos, and tho raising of seed has horotoforo been sub sidiary to thoso crops, but it has proved so profitable that many farmers havo gono into lt largely. FAKMKKS, when butchering, will mako prolltablo uso of thoir calf and sheep heads to throw thom to tho poul try. They aro better if cooked, but will bo oaten raw, A certain amount of meat is necessary, and where this cannot bo found lt should bo supplied. Persons who have thoir poultry on small runs will find cracklings cheap and beneficial. If they aro run through a sausago-mlll thoy will bo all tho bot? ter, THK prevalence of insects and the recurring falluro of tho fruit crop from various caus?s! will act as discourage ments to furthor planting, and will even lead to the uprooting of many trees; but thoso who porBOvoro to tho end and tako good caro of their or chards shall havo thoir reward. Then bo jumped up and rang for tho central ofllco, "Glvo mo No.--,? ho called. That was tho cemetery. Presently ho had tho connection. "Were you calling me just nowl" ho asked. "Calling you? Henry lu regard to the method of producing pure hydro gen, and of making water gas at an ex tremely low cost, has caused a sensa tion all ovor Europe. The process con sists in causing small Jots of steam to impingo upon incandescent coko, whereby, tb o carbon being in excoBS. tho steam is decomposed into equal volumes of hydrogen and monoxide of carbon; and, further. In leading these gases over a largo surface of a highly heated refractory substauco In presenoo of a fresh supply of superheated steam, whoreby tho burning of tho carbon to dioxide is effected and anothor volume of hydrogen ?3 llboratod. George G. Audio assorts in the Colliery Guardian that this process is described In the pat ents of Jacquelain, Gandin and Bou chain, taken out as early as 1854. The authors of tho communication say that ono ton ot coko produces about 96,000 feet of gas, which is cloven timos tho quantity of a ton of coal, which reduces tho cost of tho gas to a very low figure -very little, indeed, it may be sup posed, above tho cost of natural gas, wheu the dilllculty ol' controlling that gas ls taken into account. lt has happened, said Disraeli, that inquisitivo men examining with a flam beau anclont sepulchres which have just boon oponod, tho fat and gross va pors engendered by tho corruption of the dead, kindled as tho flambeau ap proached them, to tho groat, astonish ment of tho spectators, who frequently cried out "a miraclel" This sudden inflammation, although very natura), lias given room for tho boliof that per petual lamps woro placed in tho tombs of tho undents.
