Farm: In Home and Farm, April 15th, appeared an article entitled “Country Life,” which seems to be a popular topic fof discussion. 1 do not knbW why a Country girl cannot enjoy herself. I have always lived in the country, and have always enjoyed It, and stiH prefer it to city life, I think: It is true “Man’s WdrM is from sun tb Sufi, But woman’s work is never done.” Uiitil judgment day comes; bat if we do not enjoy ourselves it is our own fault. We should take every thing fair and easy and make it a pleasure, and try to be happy. How pleasant it is to rbatti through the woods and fields, and see the thrifty growing crops, and lis ten to the S0ng8 of the beautiful bird*! This is true as can be. Again, these same men condemn their county newspaper for not exposing rascality and corrup tion in high places, and yet when the paper does expose such rascaHty these men cannot find words severe enough to express their denunciation of the ed itor who dare* to show up such officials as corrupt men. No matter bow true his remarks are (so true that no denial can be made) they denounce him all the same. [From the New York Times.] East St. Louis, III., June 18.—The uttyr demoralization into which the public school system of this bankrupt city is now plunged is lamentable in the extreme. Owing to the continued plundering of the city treasurer’s vault ho school houses have been built for a great many years. The basements of churches in the various wards are util ised and public schools are held in churches, The resalt has been that each church has dictated the appoint*, ment of teachers. The (7atholic Cbm oh would name good Irish Catholic teach ers, the Lutheran Church good Ger man Protestants teachers, and the Methodists and Baptists would have American Protestants. Recently there WAS a change in the City administra tion and the new board of education l efused to be dictated to by the churches and made appointmebts all around. The Church locked its doors against, the teachers. Other denominations are thinking of barring their doors, aiid the chances for an education in East © slim. « - Theaff has made individuals im meusdich, but it has scarcely lifted Hs ham' protect the poor man. [Leading Article, New York Times.] What the country most needs at pre sent is by no means a man who did gal lant service in the field twenty-five years ago, but a man who can do good service in Washington for the next four years. It is fortunate that there is no military reputation the glamor of whicK is likely to lead the voters to overlook this truth.
