Robert E. Lee. In explaining tbe object of their visit they said to him: " 'Tour name has carried us into many placcs* where we did not want to go. Now we want to take your name with us where wc are going, and wo have come to ask for your auto graph on these photographs.' "Gen. Lee, in reply, said: " 'If my name has carried you, ss you say, into placcs iuto which you did not want to go, I want you to be carcful not to carry it into any placfc . where I would riot want it to go. Where arc you going?' "One said that he was bound for Mexico, another that he was looking to the far Southwest, and the others to distant sectiuns because they felt there was no opportunity for them at home by reason of tho destruction caused by tho war. "Gen. Lee said to them: " 'As soldiers you served your State faithfully; you did your duty, you risked your lives in the service of ycur country; but your State needs you to-day more than it needed you in war. It has hard problems to settle. Its business interests have been de stroyed, and fcr these very reasons it seems to me your State has a right to ask ycu to stand by it in theso days of trial r.nd to help to rebuild its for tunes. Consider whether you. do not owe to your State, tinder these con ditions, the same devotion to it, the same self-sacrifice, .'iat you gave to it ' at the call of w-r.' "If it had been possible for this thought of the great Confederate sol dier to have been carried cut, and if tho hundreds of thousands of young, virile men who left this section within a few years after the war, and the 2,500,000 pooplo who have left it dur ing the past 40 years, had been able to find at home scope for their energy, employment for their talents, whether of brain cr muscle, what a mighty dif ference thero would have been, not only in the South, but in other sec tions! The South would have gained the energy of-<he people and the ener gy of the children boru to theru, while other sections which have been en riched by their work would to that extent have made less relative prog ress than thev have made." Had Tfe4lh In HU Tongue. Mr. David Mitchell, who live* with Mr. Sclorcon Gregory, near the Fair* view community, has had an experir ence that is extraordinary. Fourteen years ago ho was shot with a 3S cnlibre pistol, the ball knocking out two teeth. Ou last Saturday bo came to Union and had Dr. Mont, {joinery to examine his tongue, for something was evidently wrong with that member. Dr. Montgomery earriod the patient to Dr. J. M. Tennesee was an especially heary sufferer. At 9 o'clock Friday night careful estimates indicate that at least 50 people were killed in/that State alone, with monetary losses about $1,000,000. At Franklin and in Ilillsboro there was loss of life. The latter town is said to be practi cally destroyed, while at Ceutrovillc and adjoining villages the loss is re ported very heavy both in lives and property. Near Pulaski, Giles county, the death list reaches twelve, and many are injured. In the vicinity of Chattagnooga the storm was felt at its worst. Tele phone and telegraph wires wero blown down and tho movement of trains was greatly hampered. The hurrieane followed the Cumberland valley, wrecking small towns and de stroying farm houses. At Ebcnezer eighteen houses were blown down. At Charlestown the storm swerved up the Hiasse fiver, destroying prop erty. At Fa.tettevillo three are known to have perished. At Cuba many houses were blown down and at Oilcstown not even a shed was left standing. Memphis reports heavy loss from towns within a radius of 100 miles in three States. At Ilorn Lake, Miss., lialf dozen lives were lost and the property damage was very heavy. lu Arkansns eight persons were killed near Mammoth Springs and a score of buildings wrecked.
