Ho thought a minute or two, then

Birth Every Four Minutes.
Greater New Yorlc is one of
the uiost healthful cities on the
globe ?at least it has been ?lur
iug the past year, according to
Health Commissioner Darling*
ton* He says that in this period
there have been 73,071 deHths, a
rate of 16. 52 per 1,000, the low*
est rate in the history of the
city. "
The stork has been busy, for
during 1908 there were 126,863
births, a rate of 28.68 pftr^ljOOO,
which far outstrips the death
rate. It is the highest percent
age of births in the lait ten
years, Dr. Darlington says. He
admits that Cupid has not been
so busy this year, as the total
number of marriages was 47,490,
a decrease of 3,598 over last
year. The enforcement of the
now liceuselaw and the business
deprossisn he tliiulcs are the rea
sons.
The births were ut the rate of
one every four minutes; donths,
one every seven minutes; mar
riages, one every twelve min
utes.
This year the deaths from ty
phoid fever shows a decroase of
197 from the yearly average of
the last five yeurs; malarial
fever shows a decreafe of 42;
whooping cough, 184; dipthe
ria and croup, 317; influensa, 77.
Hven the great White scourge
has lessoned its ravages in Now
York, for it shows a decrease
from years average of the last
live years of 573 deaths. The
deaths from spinal meningitis
are 778 under the avernge; ap
poplexv, 1,116; scute bronchitis
735; pneumonia, 2,323; bronchial
pneumonia, 149; accidents, 802.
The decrease in the deaths of
ohildren under 5 years from the
yearly average of the last five
years was 3,015. The decroase
of deaths of persons of 05 years
or over was 99G. The "total de
orease from the average of the
last five years was 9,249.
There were four, diseases the
death roll of which showed!
an incroasa over the averages of
five* veurs. They were: Mea-,

Cer, ?6i Suicides, l$l.
