Iowa Liquor sale Illegal. Davenport, Iowa, Sept. 19.? According to a decision rendered yesterday by Judge Smith Mc Plierson, of the Uuited States circuit court, the Iowa luw sys tem under which saloons are now opurutiug is illegal. Judge Mc Pherson further declares the Jowa mulct law is no license sys tem and that there has been no license system in Iowa for the last quarter of a ceutury and for that length of time there has never been n lawful sale of liquor as a beverage within the State of |owa. He further holds that no person under any circum stances can lawfully sell liquor as a beverage in Iowa. The decision was made in a Suit of the United Breweries Cqinpany of Chicago vs. the Civic Federation of Davenport. The complainants cnarged the federation with a conspiracy and sought to enjoin them from aba ting property ou which a saloon )iad been closed. Judge Mc PliQfson denied the application for a writ of injunction. Under the mulct law, Iowa Sftloun'keepers have been pay ing $000 anuually us a tax with the understanding that it legal ised their sale of intoxicating liquors and gave them relief from the old prohibitory law WlliQh is still on the statute boQks. M o r a 1? j&very man to his own trade.? JJ?W?al, in Mn'l and Dreeje. ram iMttil Columbia, Sept. 19.-^Special? The iinpressioa lnm 'prevailed pver the State forborne time that Senator Tillman, at the end of [his European tour, wou!4^bave to retire from aotive political life. It has not been thought that he would give up the Sena* torsi)ip, but in view of his ad vancing years?he und Pr. Bab cock celebrated their sixty-first birthday jointly in Paris a few weeks ago?the opinion has pre* vailed, even among those most iutimately acquainted, with the Senator's coudition, that he would hereafter be compelled to pursue practically - a passive course. "Nothing could be further from the truth," said Dr. J. W. Babci?ck, just returned to Co lumbia, front four months spent in touring Europe with Senator Tillman, and who left the Sena tor uud Mrs. Tillman to spend a month in Scotland before return ing to America, "The Senator has recovered his health and strength wonderfully. He has been the liveliest member of the party, aud it was all we could do to prevent his returning to America to take an active part in the Presidential campaign for Bryan. He takes the keenest sort of interest' in the light aud he is enthusiastically confident of Democratic success. Now, of course Senator Till mau lias reached that point in his life where lie will have to| recognize his limitations, a thing I in fact lie should have done several years ago. He can uot go like a^teaui engine any more, and lie recognizes this fact that ho will get right back into ac tive political life when lie re turns, and there is every reason to believe there are many more years of good fightiug for him. Ho was looking splendid physi callv when I lefL him. He has steadily' improved all the time, and has been in excellent spirits. The only symptoms left of his old troubles are slight occasional ache in the back of his head, and a mild drawing sensation at the coruer of his mouthf" Dr. Babcock himself spent most of his time abroad gat her ing information, and studying all sides of peliagra, and in this lie had valuable help from Sen ator Tilluian himself. In ad dition to gathering information from the libraries every where he went, Dr. Babcock was given much assistance from leading members of his profess ion throughout Europe. "After 150 years of wrestling with this fear ful disease," said Dr. Babcock, 'the medical profession, only within the lust, year, appears to have arrived at a solution of the problem. A medical treatmeut has been discovered that at last promises a prompt and perma nent cure. We will start to. morrow here in tho South Caro lina Hospital for tne Insane where we have a number ol cases, testing this cure." Let us sing the praise of the Great American Hen, who, dur ing the past year, may well have cackled with pride over the pro duction of nearly one billion three hundred million dozen eggs! Do you realize what that means? Well, listeu: If, instead of remaining quiet ly at ho;tits in Iowa, she had chosen to demonstrate her pow. ers to the universe at huge, I he Hen migbt have laid those eggs, each two luches long, eud to end, in a continuous chain reach ing "38,818 miles up to the moon, back again, and tlfen more than half way around the world for good measure?a total of 492, ? 424 miles of eggs! Further more, if those eggs had been made into one omelet half an inch thick, that omelet would easily have covered Manhattan Island, an area of twenty-two square miles! An old Mohammedan legand tells that King Solomon used to travel through the air with all his armies on a wonderful flying carpet, protected from the rays of the sun by the wings of a host qf birds. Now, according to the poultry ceusus, there arc in the United States about two hundred and eighty millions of chickens, guinea fowls, turkeys, geese and ducks of the poultry voting age, which is three mouths or over. If required to furnish a moving canopy like King Solomon, the barn yard fowls of this country, allowing only a foot of spread to each, could easily shadow a space of ton squaro miles. ?
